Cerwin Vega! VE-28S Dual 8" Powered Subwoofer
This subwoofer is an excellent buy. Wonderful sound, large amount of base support in a compact package for a very reasonable price. Highly recommend all the Cerwin Vega speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Subwoofer   July 8, 2008
I was really lucky I found this Cerwin Vega subwoofer on Amazon. I was in a big box store, not mentioning any names but their initials were bestbuy, and they were trying to steer me to some inferior orient brand subwoofer that rattled. It was bad.
I got on the computer found Cerwin Vega and ordered this one from Amazon and it was here in less than a week. Easy to hook up, works great , really thumps. No rattles, well made and its a Cerwin Vega. I sold my other speakers and bought all Cerwin Vegas. The fit and finish of this products is excellent.
I think I will go listen to Big and Rich now, on my Cerwin Vega subwoofer.
Thanks Cerwin vega

1 out of 5 stars Great while it works, but don't expect it to last.   July 28, 2008

I bought this item in February of '07 for my home theatre system. Swank. Basstacular. Come July, the thing starts making this funny noise when it's in "Standby" mode. Sort of a white-noise growl-y rumble. Think of far-off thunder and you'll be close. Awesome when your Harley Hog makes that noise, not so great when your subwoofer starts making it at 3:00 in the morning when it's not even supposed to be switched on.

Okay, so I checked around, found a service center in Atlanta (BTW - I live in Middle GA) that can do warranty work. Took it to them, they kept it a month, didn't bother calling me back. Finally called them, they said it was fixed, I went and got it. THEY'D NEVER EVEN OPENED THE CASE. So - obviously - not fixed. I called and complained, got so ticked off I finally just left it unplugged and said "...to heck with it." Decided in November that I wanted to get it fixed, so I took it to a shop in Columbus, who kept it for TWO MONTHS before calling me to say that they couldn't fix it, I should just come get it and ship it back to Cerwin-Vega in Florida.

Okay, so I did that. C-V kept the thing three weeks, then sent me a replacement unit. Got this replacement in late January of this 2008. Thing has worked fine ever since. No problems. No complaints.

It's now July of '08, and guess what?

The new sub is doing EXACTLY what the old one did. And, before anyone says anything, yes, I have tried it with different systems. It makes the noise regardless of which receiver it's plugged into, and it even makes it when it's not plugged into anything.

So - I'm telling everyone I know. If you're speaker shopping, stay away from Cerwin-Vega. Their products are defective and their service centers are completely incompetent.

4 out of 5 stars Good value. Impressed.   August 25, 2008
I would like to contribute and provide a review for this sub since there is not much out there.

I upgraded from a Yamaha yst-215 8 subwoofer. I purchased this sub because it fits in the discrete spot where my wife accepts it at less than 10' width. She is very decore picky. If I could spend more I probably would of went with a velodyne minivee 8 inch sub.

My system
Harman Kardon AVR 347
Polk SurroundBar50
Klipsch KHC-6 in ceiling speakers as rears.
Cerwin Vega VE-28s
PS3
Samsung 52 lcd "71" series

The first I thing I noticed when connecting the VE-28s is an annoying humming sound. It drove me crazy and I almost considered retuning this sub. Did not have this problem on my old sub. Yahoo Answers say to try using a 3 to 2 prong plug adapter. It actually worked! 50 cents well spent. Some argue it is not recommended to do this but I simply don't feel like troubleshooting a ground loop problem and want to play with the sub!

Music,
I felt the bass was not tight enough for rock type music. It sounded mushy. Wasn't crisp. My hip hop and techno tracks sounds great. I think sealed subs are best for music applications.
I tried the sock in the port method to tighten up the bass a little. It did help but it took away the subs efficiency and did not produce a strong bass without the sock. I usually have the volume knob 50% to avoid distortion. With the sock I had to increase volume and it introduced distortion. The sock method worked well at low easy listing volumes and high amplification.

Home Theater,
This is where I think this sub performs best. With its a ported design (huge 4 inch port). It hits lows and booms well with home theater tracks.

I've watch these blu-ray titles so far with this sub.
CloverField - The thumps and explosions were very earth shaking. I can literally feel the socks shake on my ankles and it feels as if there is a thumping monster in my backyard.
Beowulf -The scene where Beowulf battles the dragon the bass rattles the china on its shelves in the kitchen which is a good distance away. Sounds very good.

Overall this sub is a much improvement over my last sub. I haven't been exposed to allot of subs but I can say that I am satisfied with this sub for the application that I am using it for. The price tag is very fair and won't break the bank as allot of subs out there.
