You have to run a power wire all the way along the run from the amp to the volume control unit. This is needed for the auto mute to work.
I bought this item to replace a model that leaked and went bad. The old unit did not have a box and mute. I wanted the box and the thought the mute would be an upgrade.
I did not want to re-run wires.
You would need a special unit with power to use the mute power.
This unit WILL NOT WORK without the power wire.
I realize this was my mistake... unfortunately I waited 4 months to try to install it (and really read the instructions all the way) so i did not feel right returning it. It was winter so I left it until spring.
It was an expensive mistake. Don't make the same one.
However if you use the Niles speaker distribution system or have a 12v power wire running along with the speaker wires, then the lighted mute button will work well!
