Good Speakers - Good Value January 12, 2007 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
While admittedly not an audiophile, I have been quite pleased with the quality of sound from these speakers. I purchased six of these to mount in-ceiling to round out my 7.1 system. The aim-able tweeters on these speakers make it possible to fine-tune a sweet spot. I was quite impressed with the quality and sturdiness of the mounting system. No rattles or anything out of the ordinary. Overall, a great value on speakers that sound like they should cost much more.
AudioSource AS6C 6" In-Ceiling Speakers March 21, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Mainly using to extend my TV/DVD and some CD audio into my Kitchen (kitchen and living room is one open area). Hooked them up in the ceiling above my island out of a Sony TV (Var. out) into older Yamaha pro logic (80W) reciever and about 50 ft. of 14 gauge wire for each speaker with this amount of wire & wattage rating tought they would have been alittle power hungry but thier NOT). TV sounds great fills the entire area (kitchen & Living area) with a cleaner richer sound now don't have to blow the person out in living area to hear from kitchen. I've been into home audio for 20+ yrs. bought these speakers based on my budget and are my first pair of inwall speakers ( with 2 kids want to get every thing off the floor) , so I started with this area of my house & these speakers because I want to do a complete inwall surround in living area but didn't want to commit to the full package with out hearing the quality, so yes I'll purchase the complete system when budget allows, Moreover if I had a little higher budget $50-75 per pair I think I would have been wasting my money. The Music\CD audio does'nt seem as good but thats not what i purchased them for, so I don't know that I would recommend for music only applications (if you have high expectations?). Never the less I'm Happy.
Easy to install. Very good sound May 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I wasn't expecting a whole lot from these, given that they didn't cost a fortune. However, I was pleasantly surprised by them in nearly every way.
The only minor quibble I had was with the somewhat paltry installation instructions. It took a while, for example, to figure out how to remove the screen from in front of the speaker in order to access the screws. (push one of the screws forward from the back side to give it a push.)
However, getting over that tiny hurdle was the trickiest part. The installation procedure was very easy. Cut a hole in the drywall using the included template, attach your wiring, put the speaker in the hole and start turning the mounting screws. A leg swings out from each screw when you begin turning, which holds the speaker inside the hole, and you tighten each screw down to secure it firmly.
The sound is very good. I recommend you ignore their instructions about insulating inside your ceiling cavity. I really like a warm, bass-rich sound, and the more open space you leave in the mounting area, the more these speakers use your ceiling as a speaker cabinet. If you like a brighter sound, you may want to shove some fiberglass insulation inside the hole a foot in either direction before installation.
Overall, a goood bargain. I'm sure you can get superior sound if you're willing to spend 3 or 4 times as much, but it's hard to imagine beating these with anything else in this price range.
AudioSource In-Ceiling speakers July 25, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Speakers look great installed. Installation was simple, I used them for rear channel surround speakser and I am happy with them. I have read on instructons for this speaker or another to insulate around them to help the sound? I did not notice that, in fact the ones that I insulated less had better bass response in our house. I would still insulate around them to seal out the heat or cold from the attic. But the instructions I read were talking about a couple of feet of insulation. Anyway I would recommend for surround sound. I have a sub for movies but when I listen to music I did expect a little fuller sound. You can angle the tweeters towards your listening area which is nice feature.
Great Speakers. Look no more. April 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm very pleased with this product. Great price, great sound, great quality. Installation of the speakers is actually quite easy. The difficult part is running the wires. So far, I have installed 10 pairs of these speakers throughout my house. I have bought 3 more pairs that I have yet to install, and 1 dual-voice coil AS7C for the shower. The installation looks very professional, no wires to see.
I use 14 gauge wire (CL-3 for in-wall installation). 16 gauge would be ok as well, but some of the distances were over 50 feet, so I decided to go 1 gauge thicker. For the installation, I use the included template. I use a stud finder to ensure there are no studs in the way. I also find the stud to ensure they are 1 or 2 inches away from the speaker (not really necessary, but gives me a warm-fuzzy feeling that I'm safely away from them). I then cut the drywall using a drywall saw.
Since my house has blown-in insulation (not pad), I cut an 8 inch section of insulation pad (Home Depot sell a 2 x 2 feet section for about $5) and put it into the ceiling as soon as I'm done cutting the drywall. This serves 3 purposes: it replaces the insulation that fell while I was cutting, prevents the blown-in insulation from falling into the speaker (probably the most important of the purposes), and serves as an enclosure for the speaker. Then I ran the wires through the attic.
The brackets for the speakers are built in, so all you do is put the speaker in place and tighten the 4 screws (that causes the brackets to fall in place and lock the speaker into the drywall).
The only drawback is that the speaker connectors are push-in style. I would have prefered a screw-in type to ensure the wire can't be pulled accidentally while walking in the attic. To work-around this, I just used a cable tie to one of the braket posts to lock the speaker wire in place. Once the speaker is installed, you can't see any of these.
The sound quality is quite good. No complaints, especially at $55 a pair. Similar speakers can cost twice as much or more. You won't here the difference. I have only used them for stereo application, but I can imagine they work just as well for home theater application.
I use 3 Niles 6-speakers selector with volume control to power all the speakers throughout my house (18 pairs total). I power the Niles with professional amplifiers (American Audio 200 watts per channel for $159 each). In my previous house I also had installed 6 pairs of these Audio Source installed. For that application, I just wired 3 speakers in series (24 Ohms), and then wired the 2 3-speakers set in parallel for a net 12 Ohms. Then, I use a home receiver (a Technics) to power them. The sound was also great.
