Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Special effects add excitement to the home theater experience, but the dialogue in a great movie is just as important. While your front and rear speakers process action and effects, the VCS-10 center channel works with your surround sound receiver to produce dialogue with rich, natural tones that seem to come directly from the screen. Each phrase can be lifelike and clear, so you dont miss a word. The VCS-10 center channel speaker is designed to complement your TV or entertainment center. Its patented Compound Loaded drivers deliver clear, cinema-like dialogue. And Articulated Array speaker design locks dialogue on screen and provides a large consistent sound field for a cinema-like experience. The VCS-10 center channel speaker features slim, sleek dimensions that complement your television or entertainment center. Picture distortion is prevented by the VCS-10 center channel speakers magnetic shielding. This center channel speaker is an appropriate choice for upgrading your component home theater system one piece at a time.

Amazon.com Product Description
Whether you're upgrading an existing surround speaker system or adapting your current listening system to accommodate the surround capabilities of DVD and HDTV programming, the VCS-10 center-channel speaker from Bose is your key to attractive, exciting home theater sound. Get more from your component system and let the whole family enjoy lifelike movie dialogue, even when people are seated off-axis from the speaker and screen.

The VCS-10 is designed to complement your existing TV or entertainment center. Its patented Compound Loaded drivers are built to deliver clear, cinema-like dialog, and its Articulated Array drivers "lock" dialogue to the screen and provide a large, even sound field.

The speaker's magnetic shielding prevents image distortion when the speaker is mounted atop a TV or computer monitor. The speaker comes with 4 pre-attached feet and 4 optional-use additional self-adhesive rubber feet.

According to Bose, standard zip cord (2-conductor, 18-gauge wire) works for most applications. If your speaker will be more than 30 feet from your audio/video receiver or amplifier, however, Bose recommends 16-gauge wire (45 feet) or 14-gauge wire (70 feet), for hookup that maintains a maximum frequency-response deviation of +/- 0.5 dB.

What's in the Box
Center-channel speaker, adhesive rubber feet, a user's manual, and warranty information.

4 out of 5 stars Better than it's reputation!   February 16, 2004

I almost didn't order this based on the poor reviews and Consumers Reports findings. I needed a thin center speaker to go with the acoustimass cubes - this was the logical choice. After researching it at length there were mixed reviews with many negative comments. I called Cruthfield and the Bose Outlet to get their opinions. They were surprised to hear that there were negative comments. The Bose outlet advised theirs sounded great and noted it must be hooked directly to the receiver - not the module like the cubes. I have had the speaker for a couple weeks and it sounds great. I have two other surround systems, one high end and a lower end system and the Bose performs admirably for such a compact system. The articulation of words coming from the center speaker sounds like a real person. I don't understand the bad reviews - unless it's not being connected properly. Worked for me - and as most retailers note you can always send it back.

5 out of 5 stars Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker - Well worth the money!   January 20, 2004

I would have to say that I'm a bit surprised by the number of negative reviews for this exceptional product. I purchased a Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker as soon as Bose started selling them. Given the overwhelming quality that is always associated with Bose speakers and my past experience with their speakers in the 401's and 301's; this choice, for me, was an easy one.

If you're like myself and the years has done a bit of a job on your hearing, the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker and the proper settings on your receiver will make a world of difference in your home theater system and ultimately your movie watching experience. With those proper settings on your receiver, this speaker will beautifully bring the dialogue out in your favorite movies that has previously been somewhat drowned out by the other speakers in your system and you will soon find yourself rarely asking what it was that they said!

Along with the exceptional quality in speakers that Bose is known for, this speaker will sit right there on top of your television set and as it is magnetically shielded, it will not have an effect on your television set at all.

I highly recommend the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker to any and all that are in the market for a center channel speaker and are of a mood to get the highest quality product available without spending way too much money. I've used one for years and have been thoroughly happy with it, only recently replacing it on one system with a Bose Acoustimass system but that VCS-10 is right there, leading the way on another system! For years of quality output, you'd be hard pressed to do better for the meager price! {ssintrepid}

1 out of 5 stars These sound terrible. Bottom of the list in independent tests   December 25, 2005

Consumer Reports placed these at the bottom of the list of one of their recent center channel speaker comparisons, and I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. Lower costing speakers performed far better. In some calculated tests of my own, I found these had far less range and "presence" than other major brand speakers. I have a Yamaha NS-C444 speaker that provides full, lifelike sound, and handles plenty of power.

This Bose center channel speaker was a major disappointment, and far from representative of their generally outstanding audio components.

2 out of 5 stars Compare for yourself   July 5, 2006

I own a Bose VCS-10 center channel. I would say that it is a good speaker for certain applications. You will find worst and your will find better. A few thoughts.

1) Many indicate that the speaker will sound better by adjusting your receiver. True. And that holds true for any speaker. And just be cautious when listening to audio at the stores...they will many times play specially tuned cds catered to the particular speaker. Bring your own CDs to listen to you own soundtracks.

2) It is a slim design. True. At the same time, you can find a few others that are just as small or smaller. I would say that it is a matter of personal preference of style. What I find is that the Bose VCS-10 works out great with my old secondary tv. About the right size. But switching to a 55" widescreen...it doesn't look right and not integrated...and quality and volume of sound doesn't match.

The best advice I can give is to go listen to the speaker for yourself and inspect the construction...and how does it fit in your entertainment center. Compare to other speakers for sound and appearance.

Other reviewers may say that the Bose center channel made a world of difference to them. It might have in terms that it is an upgrade from their previous center channel or the Bose is their first. Again...you will want to listen to all center channels...and you will discover that there are many center channels that can better articulate audio.

The biggest advice is in a home theatre...make sure to get an excellent center channel. That is where most of the action is (over 70% of audio content) and which will make a difference. Focus on the center before you worry about the subwoofer and other surround sound speakers.

Bose is good, but I have moved on to other center channels by other makers. The Bose center channel sounds muddy, voices don't sound any better than what you hear from standard tv speakers, music scores aren't impressive, and the speaker sound/timbre don't match any other speakers in a home theatre system.

5 out of 5 stars Placement is key....   January 6, 2005

I received this speaker as a gift for xmas. When I first plugged it in, I experienced the same problem that other people had complained about...the voices seemed weak and difficult to understand. I turned the dB level all the way up and it became tolerable, but still not very good. I then happened across a website that discussed speaker placement. It suggested placing the center speaker directly above or below the tv (duh), but also said to make sure it was reasonably level with the tweeters on the side speakers (within about a foot). I made this adjustment and WOW! It was like night and day. The sound was incredible! Those of you who had problems might want to try something along these lines, and those of you checking this speaker out in stores should make sure everything is aligned properly when you listen. Hope that helps.

EDIT.....I have since tried out different centers, most of which sounded better than this one. If I were to rate it again, I would more likely give it a 3. Also, I have found that matching your center to your sides (manufacturers usually design centers to match the timbre and tone of their corresponding side speakers) can really improve the sound.
