Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Let's start by specifying that Balboa Series speakers are affordable, even for people whose disposable income is mostly disposed of on stuff like food and rent. Now forget about money, because the Balboa Series uses materials and technologies developed directly from legendary JBL professional loudspeakers, and delivers the full dynamics of today's most exciting movies and music. That's what's important. At least that's what's important once you know you can afford them.

4 out of 5 stars Great subwoofer for the price   March 14, 2008

I purchased this subwoofer to replace an old subwoofer from a HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) system. I chose this particular subwoofer first because of the brand and second because of the price. I have used JBL products for years (Home, Car, and Professional) and have always been very pleased with their performance. This one is no different.

When it arrived, I was quite surprised at it's size. It is much bigger than I expected for a single 10" subwoofer but still comfortably fits in next to my entertainment center.

As for the sound, I would consider this subwoofer very good but not great. It has much better low end extension than your typical HTIB subwoofer but it's not going to shake the ground. I have never been fond of 10" low frequency drivers and this one isn't going to change my view of them. For some reason, I always find 10" drivers to be more "muddy" sounding than a 12" or even an 8" driver. However, when the next step up (12") costs three times what this one does, I can certainly make an exception. That said, this subwoofer does sound good and has no trouble filling my entire living room with good solid bass.

The features on this subwoofer are also very good. It has speaker level and line level stereo inputs as well as a separate line level LFE input for feeding from a Home Theater receiver. One thing to note, the manual says that the LFE input will bypass the crossover setting. This is actually preferable since the crossover function should be handled by your receiver so that the sub picks up where the main speakers drop off and there is no or very little frequency overlap.

One thing to be cautious of is the power that this thing has. 100w RMS/225w Peak may not sound like much but it is more than enough to fill your average living room/den or to upset your neighbors if you live in an apartment.

All in all, this is an excellent choice for the price and I am very pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars A number one   March 9, 2008

After spending hours visiting big box stores as well as "custom" audio stores, I took the advice of other reviews on the net and purchased this unit (with fingers crossed).

Even with shipping, this cost less than the "standard" models in BBY and C City. BTW they were "name" brands like Sony and JBL

So about a week later this big (I do mean big) box arrived. I thought they had sent the wrong unit. Well, it was the right unit. Massive and beautiful with all the controls and inputs one would ever need. Oh yeah, the sound is terrific. I already have complaint from my neighbors (g)

5 out of 5 stars Sounds great.   March 27, 2008

I was more than pleased with this subwoofer.
It really improved the sound. Bass is terrific with no boominess.
Works great with my 5.1 receiver and gives amazing effects in movies
that you can feel..again with no boominess or clipping.
I researched and asked around and this seemed the best deal for the money. For cheap money this will work well in a medium size room or
better.
The only problem is this subwoofer is so good I've begun thinking I
could get better front speakers to match the sonic quality.

I just love it!!! It goes well with my 10 year old Technics Receiver and Bose speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Very good Sub - but BIG   July 17, 2008
The JBL Balboa Sub is a very nice product. It is obviously well built, and it's clearly not an entry-level subwoofer. You'll notice the quality of the build, and (I was, anyhow) be impressed with the cooling fins for the 100 watt amp on the back of the sub. Cool. This obviously ain't no toy - it's the REAL thing. You'll be pleased to tell you friends it's a JBL. The bass coming from the sub is smooth and airy - not boomy - at all. Like any subwoofer, of course, it's going to require some fiddling around before you get the balance between "Godzilla's in town" and "Is this thing working?". However, once that's done the sound is very satisfying - the bass is much smoother than either the Bose subwoofer or the Infinity that preceeded it in my living room. I use it mostly for music, but it'll do those movie explosions quite realistically.

The only bad thing to say is that this thing is BIG. Make sure that you see one before you buy on-line. I didn't and now my wife grumbles that it's like having a hotel refrigerator in the living room. The old line about subwoofers being invisible in your room doesn't apply here. You're GOING to notice this unit, both for the sound and for the size. If you don't mind that, you'll going to be glad you chose this unit
