Outstanding Monitors May 30, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm a producer/director/editor at a network television production company. We've used these M-Audio BX5a monitors in most of our edit bays for several years now and have been very pleased with their performance. They produce crisp, clear sound for voice, music and effects. They're solid, look nice and feature cool blue pilot lights on front between the woofer and tweeter.
Highly recommended for post-production audio.
Good sounding monitors! June 27, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I think these speakers sound great. They have enough power (70 watts/monitor bi-amped) that they're punchy and tight. I haven't directly compared them to other monitors but I have enough listening experience that I think they'll compare favorably to any monitors in the same price range. For a smaller-size monitor these have quite a big, even sound.
Worked Great...For a Day... February 5, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought these speakers for my small "ManCave" studio in the basement. My setup is rather simple. I have a firewire mixer that needed its own monitors to review recordings made.
These speakers were very nice and well rounded. They had a great mix of mid tones and bass that, for my setup, were quite adequate. I enjoyed these speakers for what they had to offer. Clean, crisp, LOUD sound that made the studio very useful for playback.
Note that I am using the past-tense for all of my adjectives. That is because on the 2nd day of ownership, one speaker developed a nasty buzz/hum/pop/rattle/hiss/drop-out. It would randomly do this over and over again no matter what connection I connected it to.
I gave the speakers a 4, mostly because I can't fault a random outage like this. They did work great that first day! Amazon handled the return with ease, unfortunately they did not have more to exchange so I had to get a refund. Bummer! Anyhow, I seek these speakers locally now, so off to craigslist I go!
Exactly what I wanted February 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm using these as near-field monitors for remastering old LPs. They are extremely accurate - I can hear things that got smudged over with my former el-cheapo PC speakers. It's much easier to determine if I'm creating unwanted artifacts when I de-click or de-hiss.
It seems to matter a lot to have the speakers correctly positioned as they are noticeably directional. That is fine for their intended purpose.
I think these were a great buy. Very satisfied.
Amazing speakers May 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered the M-Audio BX5a speakers on the strength of reviews posted on Amazon for these and other similar speakers. I do not regret doing so in the least. The BX5a's are amazing speakers with incredible power for their size and excellent value for the money.
I have used a pair of Bose MediaMates for the past several years and have been perfectly happy with them. I use them at home with my iPod and to take on trips so that we have a decent set of speakers when we travel. I planned to buy a pair of the Bose for my brother, however, when I went to the Amazon web site to order them, I scanned the reviews and several reviewers mentioned that M-Audio speakers were better quality and a better buy for the money.
The reviews convinced me to give M-Audio speakers a try. I bought a pair for my brother and then decided I needed some too.
While the BX5a's are a good bit bigger and heavier than the Bose, and will therefore be more of a pain to haul on trips, the sound they generate is amazing. The high end is crisp and the bass is substantial.
The only caveats that I would offer to potential buyers are that each BX5a has its own three pronged power plug, so you need to be sure that you have power available wherever you place them. Also, speaker wires for the TRS and/or XLR inputs are not included (you only need one or the other) -- these are, after all, studio monitors. Speaker jacks and wires to make them compatible with an iPod are easily found at Radio Shack or on the web and cost about $15.
