At their heart is a Mitsubishi exclusive 6-Primary Color 1080p light engine, the first to offer 6-color processing. This proprietary Mitsubishi digital light engine provides the perfect picture, whether watching broadcast, cable or satellite TV, as well as DVD or video games.

Amazon.com Product Description
Mitsubishi amps up your home theater viewing experience with the 65-inch WD-65731 1080p digital light projection (DLP) television, which combines the TurboLight150 lamp system and the latest 1080p DLP chip to produce a big, bright and bold picture with unsurpassed detail. Because 1080p provides twice the resolution of the high definition 720p or 1080i displays found in most HDTVs today, you'll get more vivid pictures--no matter the scene or content. It delivers stunningly detailed images thanks to the high-speed Plush1080p video processor (with a 6-segment, 10,800 RPM color wheel), which up-converts 1080i signals to 1080p producing four times the resolution of traditional line doublers. The WD-65731 also features a cabinet with a simple, clean design with a compact footprint that will fit virtually any home theater furnishings without taking up a lot of space.

It includes a QAM tuner that's fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception, and a wide variety of digital inputs (including two HDMI, three component, and two Firewire ports). And the set's CableCARD port means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.

The WD-65731 has a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and compatibility with 480i/480p/720p/1080i video sources. It includes six 4:3 aspect ratio modes and two aspect ratio modes from 16:9 sources. Other convenience features include color temperature controls, full-screen image freeze, two tuner picture-in-picture (PIP), split screen, V-Chip parental controls, and a sleep timer.

It pumps out audio via its integrated 20-watt speaker system (10 watts per two channels) and also offers Mitsubishi's Level Sound Dynamics Limiter features, which evens out the sound of programs--even during loud commercial breaks. The IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire or i.Link) multimedia connection provides simple, high-bandwidth, real-time audio, video and data networking between this Mitsubishi TV and digital video camcorders and compatible PC systems, enabling you to record SD or HD digital video with plug-and-play ease. This set features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 3 in (1 front), 1 out
  • S-Video: 3 in (1 front)
  • Component Video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 2 in (with 2 audio inputs)
  • RF: 2 in
  • PC DVI: 1 in
  • Analog audio output: 1
  • Digital audio output: 1 (Coaxial)
  • Firewire: 2
  • CableCARD: 1

Proprietary Mitsubishi Features
This television includes several exclusive Mitsubishi technologies that enhance its picture as well as ease of use.

  • Most important is Mitsubishi's Plush 1080p collection of imaging technologies, which up-convert lower quality images from every video source--analog and digital broadcasts, DVD players, digital cable and satellite, game consoles--to HD quality. And for a 1080p HDTV like this model, even the high quality 720p and 1080i HDTV signals being broadcast need to be reformatted. The Plush 1080p feature set scales the picture precisely, with minimal side effects. And 1080i, currently the most common form of HDTV signal, is spectacular at 1080p.
  • Rather than provide standard color and tint controls, Mitsubishi's PerfectColor technology enables you to adjust the screen's color palette with six independent color controls (magenta, red, yellow, green, cyan, and blue).
  • The patented 150-watt TurboLight lamp system focuses light more efficiently onto the DLP chip to improve image brightness 10 percent over conventional lamp systems.
  • Mitsubishi's 4D Video Noise Reduction system provides a cleaner, clearer picture from nearly any source by analyzing multiple frames to identify and remove video noise or snow caused by distortions in the video signal. This effectively keeps detail in the foreground and eliminates background noise, even in fast moving scenes.
  • Finally, the ClearThought set of features includes all-digital audio output (which converts analog audio signals to digital audio) and the NetCommand single-remote control home theater operation system (which allows you to set up and control components using simple on-screen icons). It also provides the TV Guide On Screen 8-day program guide system, which makes it easy to sort through all the television listings to find your favorite channels.

Digital Cable Ready
You can connect your cable television directly from the wall to this DLP TV without going through a cable box to receive all of your cable channels, including premium channels, and get an even better picture by doing so. This set has a slot on the back for a CableCARD, a device that descrambles subscribed channels. With the CableCARD (available from your local cable TV company), the TVOs internal tuner will tune directly to the subscribed cable channels, eliminating the need for a separate cable box.

When a digital cable TV channel is received via the CableCARD, it is decoded and remains a digital video signal all the way to the screen. Standard-definition digital channel signals are up-converted by the advanced processing capability in the set (see more about the Plush imaging feature below), giving it an HD-quality picture. The resulting image has the best possible quality, with maximum bandwidth, and minimal noise and distortion.

What's in the Box
DLP TV, multibrand NetCommand remote control (with 2 AA batteries), IR emitter cable

Warranty
One year on parts. One year on labor. In-home service.

4 out of 5 stars Great TV for the price   September 4, 2006
93 out of 97 found this review helpful

First of all, you won't find a much better TV for the price that has the features this TV has. Out of the box it looked great. I had previously owned a 62" Toshiba DLP and a 60" Sony LCD TV, both of which I returned because I was not satisfied. Despite what others may say, this TV does better than the two TV's I just listed in relation to how regular TV looks. At 65" it does a great job of taking standard television and making it look good. The Toshiba did an okay job, which I attribute to the DLP chip and the Sony LCD was just plain horrible. Compared to the other two, this TV also is superior when it comes to the PIP and video functions. The Sony didn't even come with PIP and the Toshiba would frame the pictures with black bars which made the pictures smaller. This TV uses all of the available space for both pictures and you have options to reformat each picture so that one is larger than the other. Switching between pictures is a breeze.

Now to the reason I only gave it four stars... Out of the box the fan seemed to buzz a little more than the other two TV's I owned. I wouldn't say it's loud, but the buzz can certainly be heard when the volume is low. I looked all over the internet to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem, but coulnd't find any reviews that mention this. It may just be an issue with this particular TV. But then again, I am a picky person and find flaws in many things that some would think are acceptable.

Another problem is also not significant, but it is worth mentioning. I found that if you mute the TV, then turn it off while muted and turn it back on later, the TV will still be muted even though the volume level may be turned up. The first time this happened, I thought it was strange that it stayed muted when I turned it back on. I then tried to turn the volume up and no sound came out. The volume level would increase but you couldn't hear anything. I tried changing the channel, changing the input, checked the cables, and even turned it off and back on but still no sound. I then hit the mute button and finally the sound came back on. This is definately a glitch that some may never notice, but I hope it saves some the frustration I experienced. It does not do the same thing if you hit mute, then try to turn the volume up. It only happens if you mute, turn your TV off and back on, then try to turn the volume up. You must press mute to get the volume back.

Aside from the two pretty insignificant issues, it's a great TV. My brother also just bought the 62" Samsung DLP, which is a great TV as well. After owning and viewing these other brands, I definately think Mitsubishi and Samsung are the best by far. Stay away from Sony and Toshiba. The only reason I took the Mitsubishi over the Samsung was because it was 3" in larger.

12/13/06:

I have had this TV now for about 6 months and thought I would provide an update... The "glitches" I mentioned above are really not glitches after all. Regarding the mute issue, that is actually listed as a function in the owners manual. I haven't had any trouble with it since. As for the fan, yes it seems a little loud when you first get it, but surprisingly it gets quieter the more you use it. There must be a burn in period with the fan. Overall, I have had no problems. I have looked at other brands to see if I should have bought something else, but nothing seems to compare. If you use PIP a lot like I do, this has the best format compared to other TV's. This will also outperform any LCD project TV when it comes to standard definition TV due to the DLP and 6 segment color wheel (most other brands only have a 5 segment color wheel). You can't go wrong with this TV!!!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful HDTV   August 18, 2006

paid 3k and feel its worth the price. have only had for 2 weeks, but the 720p and 1080i signal I receive at times via outdoor antenna looks absolutely awesome. no flaws to mention. it has a built in formating function that allows you to fit the picture you receive to the screen size. very adjustable with the settings(kelvin, 6 colors, etc...)
also has numerous connections making install a snap(weighs 100lbs)

very happy with this set for hdtv

couple downsides with analog signal...since it is a big screen size, analog signals can look very fuzzy close up(less than 10 feet)when viewing. This is a major drawback for me cause most all channels arent hd yet. my 32" sony looks better when viewing analog.

but for future buyers, this set has a beautiful picture at 720p and 1080i. just need to have access to a hdtv signal.

UPDATE... recently hooked up a ps3 via hdmi and watched talladega nights in 1080p. what an amazing experience. I really love 1080p. the picture quality was just fantastic. in addition the video games in 720p look awesome. after several months, I am really pleased with this tv and dont have any regrets.

Great Price fast delivery Amazon is the best thing since low carb bread and This TV rocks. ordered it and wallahh it was at my door in 3 days. At first I thought the screen was a tad to big but guess what ITS NOT. The HD looks amazing. I looked for about 3 months for a DLP TV set. It came down to this one or the 61 inch Samsung. I am so Glad I got this one.
I Think the only down side is the Fan noise at low sound level. Other than that You get used to it I guess.
People say that you need to get insurance for the Bulb. But guess what A monkey could replace the 75 dollar bulb. So dont waste your hard earned money at Best Buy or Sears or Circuit City with that stupid sales pitch that you need to get the extended bulb warranty. All it takes is a Screw driver to remove the screw and the new bulb housing at the back slides out, slide the new one in and badda bing your back in business.

3 out of 5 stars Mitsubishi 65   January 4, 2007

Price for large 65" screen is hard to beat. Mitsubishi image quality and brightness even in sunny Arizona are also good once component cables are used. 1080p is still ahead of time but since TV sets can last decade long, better to invest in 1080p that I will wish I have in about two years. I am waiting for HD broadcast at 1080p or more likely sooner will be HDDVD player prices dropping below $350. Built-in DVI interface is great for connecting PC to the TV. Wonderful for watching streaming video on TV and opens up technical possibilities.

Now the down sides. 65" screen plus carton box do not fit within Mini-van even with back seats removed. One needs a pick-up truck to move 65" TV. I had envisioned free shipping from Amazon solves problem of having to transport TV. Everything looked perfect even after unboxing; nevertheless, there was an imperceptible screen depression that became annoying while I watched football games. Normally straight field lines are distorted around this warped screen region. Mitsubishi suggested couple local TV repair shops. TV repair shops either will not do house call or work on TV sold by Amazon. After repeated calls and emails, one local TV repair shop arranged by Mitsubishi schedule me in about 3 weeks. The repair only took 5 minutes as the front screens needed to be reseated into their grooves; possibly shifted out of the groove during shipping? Pain in the neck if one ever needs to repair big screen TVs.

Next, hard to find spot with cable inlet to locate this large screen and then to arrange seating further than 9 feet away from screen for comfortable viewing. Then, watching 4:3 picture images adjusted to fit 16:9 screen size is either seeing blacked out zones or altering 4:3 images. Various choices to view images but nothing look exactly right.

There is sometimes an annoying self shut-down within 30 seconds right after turn-on. TV senses temperature imbalance and shuts-down. This is occurring once in a while during the cold of winter. I worry about the heat of our Arizona summer.

Finally, I am anticipating to change out light bulbs in about two years once images dim and perhaps rotating color wheel mechanism too. Maintenance duty plus $300 light bulbs are down-sides of all DLP systems. LCD and plasma systems do not have maintenance duties but I am electrically savy and I prefer DLP that consumes less energy and weighs less. If not environmentally conscious, DLP's lower weight is a plus when moving the large screen around to check out different viewing options.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing picture at a great price   December 18, 2006

I have had a Toshiba 65" HDTV for the last 5+ years (with no problems) and upgraded to the Mitsubishi for DLP and HDMI inputs.

I must say that this picture blows away the Toshiba (granted the technology is light years ahead of the old first-gen HDTV); 1080i from Dish HD looks crystal clear, 1080p from my Blu-Ray player is simply amazing and upscaled SD-DVDs look equally amazing.

With all of that said the most amazing thing about the TV is how light it is; I was able to lift it up on the stand by my self.
