Very low reliability and poor service from Samsung January 9, 2008 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
This TV is bright and has fantastic picture quality. It is very easy to setup. My XBOX360, Dish HD, and an upconverting DVD player all looked very nice. I was thrilled with my Christmas purchase until it failed yesterday (yes, less than 3 weeks) with a dark thin horizontal line (about 4mm thick) making a permanent appearance about 2/3rds of the way down. Samsung doesn't cover such a defect claiming it is screen burn-in!!. There is no signal I could put into the system that burns that thin a line (horizontally) at that position on the TV. But Samsung is sticking to its guns saying that is screen burn-in and that it is not covered.
The Samsung customer rep told me that 3 of 5 customers calling with similar problems are Amazon buyers. Given my high satisfaction with other stuff from Amazon, I don't think Amazon is somehow buying seconds. The rep wouldn't assign any reason to explain his statistics despite me pressing him.
I requested a return to Amazon. The process is that someone would send me an email in 2 days confirming a pick-up, possibly in 2 weeks and a refund 2 to 4 weeks after that. Given this is a big chunk of change, I am somewhat unhappy with the time it takes to get the money back to buy something else (it wouldn't be a Samsung for sure :)).
I will update this review based on how my return experience goes with Amazon.
Buyer beware.
Update ** 01/29/08 Waited 10 days after Amazon said Cevo logistics (formerly Eagle) would be calling me to pick up the unit. They didn't call - but I was able to contact them by phone and arrange a pick-up schedule. Pickup process was painless - I had to show him the defect and they carried it away. I was sure glad I kept the packaging. Sometimes, sixth sense helps :)
Cevo picked it up on 1/20/08. I had an email from Amazon on 1/28 saying that they got the unit and would arrange a refund. I got the refund on my credit card today, just as they promised. Good email communications along the way from Amazon.
Conclusion: I am *really, really* glad I got this from Amazon. Love Amazon, hate Samsung! If you do get the TV, retain all of the packaging just in case.
May the HD be with you.
Great Plasma Set - Big, Beautifully Styled, Great Picture September 1, 2007 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
I can't believe I'm the first to review this set on Amazon. It was delivered yesterday. I ordered Monday. Eagle called on Thursday to schedule delivery and we settled on 1 - 5 PM on Friday. About 4:30 on Friday, the Eagle truck showed up with my two TV's. Also bought a Samsung 6187S DLP/LED set for the kids to play games on. Anyway, Eagle sent two guys out for the delivery. They brought both sets in and unpacked them and then waited until I connected the cable and made sure they were working. Overall, I couldn't ask for a better experience.
I was very hesitant to order big ticket electronics like this over the web but contrary to the experience others have reported everything went very well.
As for the 63" Samsung plasma, the picture is fantastic and the styling is much nicer than the Panasonic 65". It's on par with the Pioneer Elite series, very classy gloss black bezel and stand. Reflections and glare are very well controlled. The compact size of the plasma screen is amazing. The 6374 is replacing a Mitsubishi 73" CRT rear projection behemoth. The plasma screen is 4 inches deep vs 30 inches for the Mistsubishi. My wife always hated the Mitsubishi and loves the Samsung.
So far, the TV has only been hooked up to digital cable. I can't wait to see this thing hooked up to Blue-Ray. Hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision.
Can't beat the value December 23, 2007 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
We've had this TV for about 3 weeks, and are absolutely thrilled with the purchase. This is our second Samsung set (the other one LCD), and we are consistently impressed with the quality and stunning picture.
We did a lot of homework on this purchase, and a few points are pretty compelling:
1) Price/Performance: Many people steered us toward the Pioneer Kuro, as the "pros" consistently rate this very high. The Kuro has an extra HDMI port and light sensing, but costs at least $1000 more and gives you 3" less screen. (Not even going to discuss Pioneer 65" sets, because then you are nearly double the cost of this TV, which is just silly.) The Kuro's a nice set, but in our opinion, the Samsung has a brighter, more saturated color than the Kuro, and many regular people I have spoken with agree on that. Amazon's deal is $1000-1500 better than anywhere else. 2) Do you watch sports, news channels, or are you planning on using a video game system? The Samsung has a feature that shifts the pixels around every so often to prevent burn-in. This is a unique feature to Samsung, and in my house, this is a key consideration. If you're watching something that has a static part of the screen (scoreboard, newsticker, station "bug", video game menu, etc.) , you'll want this.
3)We have the TV in a large & bright family room - our old projection TV was nearly useless if you didn't draw all the curtains. We're very pleased with the ability of this TV to be viewed in different conditions. Obviously, on the brightest days you'll get a little glare, but the coatings are really great on the screen, and we're very pleased to be able to not be forced to watch in the dark.
4)Amazon White Glove was FANTASTIC. The day my set was delivered, the weather was snowy and icy, and I was shocked that they were keeping the appointment. They pressed on, and despite the trickiness of the snow and ice, set my TV (200lbs - heavy!) up nice and safe, were neat, and didn't leave any mess at all.
A great experience, highly recommend this deal, folks. Enjoy your HD!
Superb picture, excellent sound, and a phenomenal price! October 18, 2007 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
Simply put, this is an amazing television. The contrast and clarity is unsurpassed, and I spent quite a while researching and comparing before I purchased. At the retail stores, the cheapest I could find this for was right at $7,000, plus an additional $900 for a 3-year service plan. Through Amazon, I paid $2,000 less for the television and only $600 for a 4-year service plan. The delivery was smooth and they were incredibly courteous and professional. I'm not a huge technophile, and this television was amazingly simple to set up. Straight out of the box, it has user-friendly prompts to guide you through the process. I've now connected my digital DVR box, a surround sound system and a PlayStation 3, and each time I've been incredibly impressed with the simplicity and ease of connectivity. The side ports make it simple to expand the television's capabilities.
The picture quality is superb. I'm using HDMI connections and it blows my mind that I've ever watched television any other way. The sound controls permit you to change the focus of the sound, so it's perfect for both large and small rooms. My living room isn't very large, and the "narrow" setting concentrates the sound directly towards the couch (a concern for those of us living in apartment buildings who don't want to blast our neighbors). I was really surprised at the richness of the bass that comes from the television's speakers. Now that I've added the surround sound system, it's even more like sitting in my very own movie theater!
Pros: outstanding picture quality and resolution; ease of installation and setup; sleek looks; terrific sound quality; expandability.
Cons: it's quite heavy (what do you expect from a 63" television) so mounting on the wall must be done very carefully to ensure stability. As far as cons go, that ain't bad!
Bottom line: the price is incredible, the service has been impeccable, and the quality is top-notch!
Wonderful until it stopped working September 5, 2007 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is an excellent TV. Picture is great and the whole display is very nice and modern. Everything would have been fine until 2 weeks later my TV didnt turn on. As you can imagine this was very frustrating to say the least. I am not sure what caused this problem as the technician is coming out later this week to fix it. I had this TV plugged into a monster surge/conditioner protector so I am clueless as to what happened. Up to this point I would have recommended this TV as it is better than others costing thousands more. I might suggest you wait a few more months just to see if there are bugs with this tv that samsung needs to work out as this is a relatively new set. Oh and be prepared to help get this tv in your house as it ways just about 200 lbs and the delivery company sends one guy. In comparison to the panasonic 65 inch 1080p plasma ($10,000) this tv is much better in all aspects. Again I hope my problem was just a fluke.
