KDL-V26XBR1 - Nice Unit October 26, 2005 40 out of 43 found this review helpful
I recently received my KDL-V26XBR1 and have used it for about 3 weeks now. Overall I am very happy with it; the picture is great, setup was fairly easy, there are numerous inputs on back for DVD, HD cable box, my Mac mini, Xbox, Tivo, and VCR. Still have inputs left over. The picture is very clear and superb on HD channels. TV can be viewed straight on or at severe angles, and can still be seen nicely. Speakers sound good if you dont have AV system hooked up. Overall, I would recommend this TV highly. I'd give it 5 but for the huge remote, the huge oval base, and the poorly-executed wake timer functionality (or lack thereof) (see below).
I do have 3 gripes. First, the base is very oval and protrudes a lot from front edge of TV, so you wont be able to put it on edge of table - the TV must be pushed back about 6" so that the oval base isnt sticking out. Second, the remote control is FAR too large. Although rather narrow, the remote is almost 12" (yes, as long as a ruler!) long. It doesn't have too many buttons so could have been condensed into half the footprint with a little planning. Third, and my biggest gripe (although not likely an issue for many people) is the TIMERS function. I like to wake up to the TV playing - and on this TV you can set an automatic 'turn-on' time (that's good) (actually there are 2 timers). However, when the TV turns on by itself via the timer function, it defaults to the cable (coaxial) input - which I do not used because I have HD cable box. All my inputs are on auxiliary video inputs (i.e. not on the coaxial input, it is unused). Hence, when the TV auto ons by the timer, all I get is white fuzz. This is strange because if I manually turn TV off, then on again, it starts "where I left it" i.e. on the input it was using when I turned it off. But not for timer - it turns on ONLY to the coaxial input so if you use the HDMI, s-video, component, or composite inputs youre out of luck via the auto-on/wake feature. This is unfortunately a huge oversight on an otherwise great unit. You should be able to set timer to turn onto a desired video input since you can adjust just about every other setting imaginable on the TV.
Overall rating: 3.75 rounded up to 4.

damn crisp pic, its even picking up hd channels it shouldnt, just got an upconversion hdmi dvd player for 99$ only down side was the cost of the cable... excellent picture quality nice features i think i will get the 40 for my living room! pc inputs like a charm... only prob is the resolution is a bit odd... desktop has no problem but the notebook i have to drop down the res a little .... all in all a killer monitor/tv replacement.
Unbelievable picture April 18, 2006 My original thought was to purchase a HD TV for my living room first, but the 19" Sony in my bedroom finally gave up the ghost after 22 years and I decided to replace it. After careful review I narrowed my decision to this TV and the Sharp Aquos. In my opinion this TV had the superior picture so while it was more expensive I decided on purchasing this one. This TV sits on my dresser and takes up substantually less real estate than the 19" it replaced. Because I am placing it on my dresser, I decided to use a cable card rather than a convertor box and couldn't be happier.
Unlike one of the previous reviewers, I have don't use the timer so that has never been an issue. In my location, the "free" HD stations only number 9, so my HD viewing is rather limited. How much programming can one get on Discovery HD? But what I have found is that not only are the HD channels unbelievable but even the digital and analog channels have taken on a new life.
This TV has one of the best pictures I've ever seen and I would highly recommend it as a high definition choice.
The picture is best viewed from either straight-on or close to straight on otherwise it begins to wash out. Having said that though, the detail is not lost even at severe angles of view. I find that due to the nature of LCD the colors lose intensity as the viewing angle increases. This is not a criticism of the TV just something one needs to be aware of when considering a purchase.
A previous reviewer mentioned the remote and I concure. It would be nice for it to be back-lite as well but the 4 buttons I use most often are volume, channel change, mute and on/off and they are easy to find in the dark. I've heard it said that most manufactures of high quality audio/video components put minimum time and effort into the remote because of the assumption that a "univeral" remote will be chosen anyway. Given that assumption, the Sony remote is fine.
This is an excellent TV, with an unbelievable picture, just watch Discovery HD Theater or PBS HD and you've never want to go back.
Great TV for a Bedroom November 18, 2007 I purchased this TV over a year ago and just got around to rating it. After one year of watching I would say it has one of the best pictures I have seen. I am using it in a bedroom so I did not want the extra expense of having a cable box. This TV has a built in cable card slot so I had Comcast install a card over a year ago and I have problem free HD viewing with out the extra cost. It is the perfect size for a bedroom and the best thing is being able to watch HD television without the cost of the extra box. The picture cannot be beat. I just ordered a 40' Sony HDTV for my living room to replace a five year old Toshiba 34 inch CRT TV. Even though that set plays perfect it was one of the earliest HDTV models and is quite bulky. I am going with another Sony because in my opinion they have the best picture.
