Amazon.com Product Description
The 26-inch Toshiba 26HF66 flat-screen CRT HDTV proves you don't need to spend an arm and a leg to bring vividly colorful high-definition programming into your home. It has a widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio that's ready for HDTV programming and letterboxed DVD movies. It features a variety of video technologies that will enhance your enjoyment of both standard and and high-definition pictures, including a digital comb filter and advanced velocity scan modulation. It also upconverts standard definition broadcasts to near HD quality. And it's easy to connect to brilliant imagery with the component and HDMI connections--the latter offering pure digital audio/video performance with no degradation of signal from just one convenient cable. Surprisingly slim at just 19.5 inches deep, its attractive silver and black cabinet will look great in any room.

The set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC technology upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080iHD, resulting in a significant reduction in jagged line artifacts to create the sharpest, most realistic picture possible from every source.

This set features Toshiba's CableClear DNR+ technology, which optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable sources to eliminate video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. It utilizes the digital 3D/YC comb filter to compare frames and determine the existence and extent of video noise. It then applies the needed amount of digital video noise reduction, and the appropriate sharpness adjustment to keep the picture clear. This feature now works on RF, composite and S-Video inputs, and can be selected by input.

The FST PURE flat screen picture tube delivers increased viewing angles along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate, life-like images. This feature eliminates unwanted reflections from room lighting, which is a common problem in conventional tube designs. It also improves sharpness and brightness.

The aforementioned 3D Y/C comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. The Cinema Mode feature performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. This set also offers five TheaterWide modes that expand letterboxed images--which is particularly useful when watching narrow letterboxed Panavision or CinemaScope films.

The Movie Mode feature changes the basic picture setup conditions to create a more theater-like picture, while the Sports Mode feature automatically adjusts appropriate picture levels to produce enhanced color, detail and brightness. Other convenience features include color temperature control, auto aspect ratio detection, closed captioning on mute, sleep timer, tri-lingual on-screen display, video input labeling, channel labeling, channel/video lock, and V-Chip parental controls.

This set has two stereo speakers that produce 5 watts of power per channel (10 watts total). The StableSound feature eliminates the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels. Here's the full round-up of video and audio connections:

  • Composite A/V: 3 (1 front)
  • S-Video: 3 (1 front)
  • Component Video: 1
  • HDMI: 1
  • RF: 1
  • Headphone: 1 (front)

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV, expecially for the price   July 7, 2006

This TV is the successor to the 26HF84 and the most obvious change is the black bezel. I'm still waiting for a remote that works with my Comcast HD tuner. Without this I ended up juggling remotes: one for changing channels and another for changing video inputs between TV, DVD, and video camera. In the end I got a Kameleon universal remote which simplified things.

A couple of other things to note about this TV:

First, it uses a picture tube rather than an LCD or plasma display. So while the screen is flat, it's not thin. You can't tell by looking at the pictures, but this TV is 19" thick.

Second, although it's pretty thick, at 27.5" wide it's unusually narrow for a 26" HDTV. The narrowness comes from having the speakers below the picture, rather than on each side. This is very handy if you want to put the TV in a cabinet that's short on width. The Syntax Olevia TVs are handy this way as well because the side speakers are removeable.

A picture tube has its pluses and minuses over an LCD or plasma screen. Two big pluses are that CRT's cost a lot less and are very bright. No difficulties watching this TV in a bright room. The obvious minus is that they're thick and heavy. A second technical downside is that straight lines don't necessarily come out straight. If you display a test pattern on the screen you can see that there's slight distortion, with lines bowing out in the middle. This could be a problem if you planned to use the TV as a computer monitor (which you are specifically cautioned not to do, by the way).

In practice, when you look at television programs you don't notice whether straight lines are perfectly straight and you get a picture that is gorgeous. When displaying HDTV programs the quality of this TV is everthing you could hope for. You can get a bit spoiled and you really notice the difference when you go back to a standard TV, or watch programs that aren't in HD.

4 out of 5 stars Real Quality Can Come Cheap!   June 22, 2006

I purchased this HDTV after 6 months of debating on which one I should get and I'm extremely pleased thus far. The Toshiba is very attractive, the controls are simple, and the speakers are very good...they provide crisp clean treble & bass. My Xbox 360 never looked so good! I was considering Samsung's TXR3079WH/TXS3082WH because I loved the SlimFit design, but when I saw them on display they both had this purple hue in each of its four corners that fades in and out...IT'S EXTREMELY ANNOYING! I thought that with the newer model TXS3082WH Samsung might have fixed that issue, but they didn't. That really scared me off and I chose Toshiba...HANDS DOWN. I asked the salesman why the Samsung TV's had this problem and he told me that it was something magnetized caused by the trains running underground. I then asked him why it wasn't affecting the Toshiba's? When I saw he didn't have a straight answer...I knew the Toshiba was for me. The picture quality and sharpness is better than the Samsung's too. Take heed to my warnings of the Sammy's or you will be crying later.

3 out of 5 stars Ok set, but greenish tint   November 26, 2006

The set is ok overall...good price, free shipping, and good reviews convinced me to buy this set.

Now, after about a month, It continues to have a greenish tint when using the Colorstream HD input.

I'm going to call TOshiba support and see what can be done. Hopefully, I won't have to send it back.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This TV!   April 26, 2007

I have a built-in television cabinet in my living room, so I could only purchase an HDTV that was 26" or less wide. I was looking for a 1080i picture, as well. After lots of research, I decided on the Toshiba 26HF66 and I am thrilled at the bargain I got. The picture is unbelievable, and the sound is so strong, I typically only turn it up to 1/4 or its total volume. It is able to handle all HD formats, and the price is what really made it an amazing purchase for me. Now I'm looking for a big screen to go in my basement, and Toshiba is at the top of my list, thanks to this awesome mid-sized TV.

4 out of 5 stars A good CRT HD TV   November 10, 2006
A very good picture with both Hd and Sd sources over the air TV. Could use at least one more input source with S video in. It accepts a good progressive scan dvd player with a steady picture quality. Set up was simple and quick. Only confusion is the reversal of channel and volume controls opposite to other remotes.
