Amazon.com Product Description
The 27-inch Toshiba 27DF46 flat-screen CRT television features a standard 4:3 aspect ratio screen and 480i (interlaced) display resolution, which isn't compatible with the pristine imagery of true high-def resolution broadcasts. However, it does feature a 16:9 aspect ratio mode with zoom functionality for enjoyment of widescreen DVD movies and high-def TV programming. And you'll still be able to receive digital broadcasts thanks to the set's built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner--which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves--and its QAM tuner that is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. Surprisingly slim at just 19.5 inches deep, its attractive silver and gray cabinet will look great in any room.

The FST PURE flat screen picture tube delivers increased viewing angles along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate, life-like images. This feature eliminates unwanted reflections from room lighting, which is a common problem in conventional tube designs. It also improves sharpness and brightness.

The digital comb filter converts chrominance and luminance signals into a digital medium prior to separation and 2H delay. This process provides enhanced color purity and reduced dot crawl. It's also able to eliminate detail noise in intricate scenes as well as reduce color bleed from broadcast sources. The advanced velocity scan modulation feature improves black to white image transitions for sharper detail and enhanced picture definition in high brightness operating conditions.

The GameTimer feature also allows parents to set the TV to shut off after a specified period of game playing, and it will stay off until a lockout key code is entered. Other features include a glow-key remote contol, closed caption decoding, channel labeling, favorite channel, tri-lingual onscreen menus (English, French, Spanish), and V-Chip parental controls.

This set has two stereo speakers that produce 2.5 watts of power per channel (5 watts total) that can produce virtual surround sound. The double baffle front-firing speaker design delivers improved stereo sound reproduction without connection additional speakers. The StableSound feature eliminates the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels. It features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite A/V: 2 (1 front)
  • S-Video: 1
  • Component Video: 1
  • RF: 1

Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Product Description
Standard TV as you know it is under an imminent threat. That threat is a good thing because itwill enable more availability for widescreen HDTV broadcasting. It is expected, by FCC mandate, that all TV broadcasting will convert from analog (NTSC) to digital (ATSC) by the beginning of 2009. At that point every TV without a digital TV tuner will be rendered obsolete. The Toshiba 27DF46 is a traditional-style, 4:3 standard-definition TV that has both analog and digital tuners. Digital content, regardless of broadcast resolution, will be displayed at standard-definition (480i) screen resolution, on this TV. Enjoy TV the way you want and be ready for the digital turnaround. Stereo and Virtual Surround Sound from 2 built-in speakers Front and Rear A/V inputs / Fixed Audio output 3-line comb filter brings out fine picture detail and enhances color purity 5 Watt double-baffle speaker system / Stereo MTS (SAP) sound with dbx for full-broadcast stereo sound with access to bilingual or secondary audio signals StableSound with noise muting maintains volume within a preset rangeV-Chip parental controls keep children from being exposed to undesirable TV programs Trilingual (English, French, Spanish) on-screen menus with auto channel programming Sleep Timer Unit Dimensions (HWD) - 22.5 x 29 x 19.5 / Weight 88 lbs

1 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk -- DO NOT BUY THIS TV!   July 3, 2006

This was my first Toshiba product after being a dedicated Sony buyer for many years.

The features of the this unit are great. For a cheap price you get HD reception and decent analog as well. (HD resolution is only 480 for you videophiles). The remote control is clunky and the menus are way too complicated. This is not a great TV for channel surfers as there is a 'delay' each time you change a station before the picture appears and you cannot surf through by quickly pressing the channel up/down button. The TV changes to one channel and then will NOT change to another until the picture actually shows on screen.

My biggest gripe however is that I have had this TV for less than 90 days and it is already in the shop for service! I have owned Sony's that NEVER needed service and were only replaced when their features were obsolete or my needs changed. This will probably be my first and only Toshiba.

In addition to the frustration of an inoperable TV, it has taken 4 weeks to have my TV repaired by Toshiba's authorized service center and I am still waiting for my unit to be returned.

** FINAL UPDATE: August 8th, 2006: After two months of wrestling with Toshiba "Customer Service" I now own a SONY TV and I will never buy another Toshiba product. Toshiba could not tell me even how many MONTHS it would be before they could get a replacement board for my TV. They finally agreed to issue an exchange (not a refund) to the store I purchased this unit from. Fortunately the manager of the local store allowed me to use the Toshiba as credit towards a Sony. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau over Toshiba's poor customer service and products. I have learned over the past 5 months that ALL Toshiba CRT TV's are now manufactured in Thailand because they purchased Orion Electric. There are several internet message boards with posts testifying that Toshiba tube based TV's are having tons of problems since this change took place. Spend your hard-earned money with somebody else! Caveat Emptor!

4 out of 5 stars A definite step up.   July 6, 2006

As standard definition tube TV's go Toshiba has put together a nice one here. Picture quality from a basic DirecTV box is decent even when connected via standard coax cable. It is however, when you play a DVD connected through the componet jacks on the rear that the picture really jumps off the screen. The details are generally sharp and the colors are vibrant. (Note: If you are upgrading from a smaller tv that doesn't have a 16:9 mode, you may need to adjust your DVD players output to maximize its benefits. You will still have the black bars at the top and bottom but they occupy significantly less screen area then I have been accustomed to.)

I have been largely please with the setup features and overall performance of the set. My one gripe, small as it may seem, is that there is only one set of component jacks on the rear of the set. The second set is in the panel on the front.

Bottom line, if you are replacing an older tube tv then this set is worth a look.

Bought a new one that had box damage. I have had it for a month no problems to speak of. Also it takes HD it is only 480i but for 99.99 I couldn't go wrong.
