A Refined, Slimmer Look
The HD-A35's refined design--with rounded edges, a slim chassis, and a high-gloss black face plate--looks sleek and elegant in your home theater system without taking up too much real estate.

Outstanding Performance
All of Toshiba's HD DVD players support the enhanced features of the HD DVD format, including picture-in-picture video, audio commentary, and Web-enabled network capabilities. With an Ethernet port, the A35 can connect to the Internet for firmware updates to keep the player up to date on new features, and to support the growing number of HD DVD titles with interactive online features and bonus content.

The HD-A35 uses the latest HDMI 1.3 interface to connect to your HD television, providing large bandwidth to eliminate any data bottlenecks and to support new technologies for the utmost in viewing experience. The HD-A35 can output video at 1080p, the highest resolution available, and includes support for 24-frame video, which maintains the native 24-frames-per-second rate of films, thereby delivering an experience more similar to one in theaters. It also supports Deep Color, a new standard that breaks through the 8-bit color depth limitation of existing HD video and allows a wider range of color than ever before.

Of course, the HD-A35 upconverts from other resolutions so all your standard-definition DVDs display in near-HD quality on your HD television. In addition to 1080p, the HD-A35 also outputs at 720p and 1080i if desired.

High-Definition Audio
Audiophiles rejoice! The A35 has HDMI pass-through audio: The audio signal can bypass the HD DVD player's internal audio processor and feed directly into an A/V receiver. The HD-A35 can output 5.1 channel analog audio and, with HDMITM, High Bit Rate Audio (up to 7.1 channels). With a capable receiver, the lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio standards are then decoded externally and audiophiles will be rewarded with the highest fidelity surround sound possible, adding a new dimension of enjoyment to the home theater experience. The HD-A35 also supports other surround sound audio standards including Dolby Digital Plus, DTS 5.1, and DTS HD (core only).

One-Touch Convenience
You can use the CE-Link (HDMI-CEC) to connect the HD-A35 with other CEC-capable devices for unsurpassed simplicity and convenience. For example, if the HD-A35 is connected to a compatible HDTV, you can turn on both the HD DVD player and the TV and start playing a movie with a single touch of a button on the remote.

The HD-A35 is backed by a limited 1-year warranty.

Six times the resolution of regular DVD (up to 1080p).

Upconverts standard DVDs to the output resolution.

Tons of new interactive features and bonus content.

2 out of 5 stars A little disappointed   October 25, 2007

I bought this DVD player as my first entry into the world of HD-DVD. My expectation level was very high based on the reviews that this product has received and Toshiba's reputation as an industry leader. My experience, however, has not lived up to my expectations.

Initial setup went as expected and I immediately download the latest firmware (version 1.1). The firmware update took approximately 1/2 hour but completed normally. I tested the unit with both HD-DVDs and standard DVDs. The HD picture and sound quality were excellent and the up-convert of the standard DVD was very good. That's the good news. While watching only my second HD-DVD (brand new), the player froze for approximately 1 second about half way through the movie. It then continued to play, however, the picture and sound tracks were no longer in sync. I stopped the movie, rewound through the affected scene and re-played and it played perfectly. Later, I tried to simply power up the player and it locked up completely. The lights were on but it would not respond to controls from either the front panel or the remote. I had to force a power down by pressing and holding the power button until it powered off. My final complaint is concerning speed. This unit takes considerably longer to power up to a ready state than any DVD player that I have ever owned. It is also very slow to load DVDs and extremely slow to respond to remote commands.

I understand that this unit is in it's infancy and I sincerely hope that Toshiba is able to work out the bugs with firmware updates. With that said, however, I expected more quality from a DVD player with a $500 price tag.

01/03/08 - As an addendum to my original review - Since upgrading to firmware 1.3, my experience has improved considerably. It's still a little slow on startup, but nothing like it was and my playback issues have virtually vanished. I'm very glad that I gave it a second chance and didn't send it back. At this point, I would probably give it 4-5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant HD-DVD player   October 26, 2007

When I first hooked this up, I thought I was going to have the same problem I had with my HD-A2 player-it wouldn't boot up. However, this player booted up just fine and I am very impressed with the picture. The sound on Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD soundtracks is terrific when played through my Onkyo 805 receiver. I do have a quibble with the Dolby True HD on some discs, though. I put in one and every time I went to a different track or tracked forward, there was about a minute that the picture was silent. I found that the set up on the machine was very easy and the instruction manual is well written and informative. The remote is the same as the one for my HD-A2, so if I lose this one, I can use the other one. The machine is smaller than the HD-A2 and is very easy to move around. It's quite light, but feels sturdy when you pick it up. All in all this is an attractive unit, performs very well, and will blow your ears off when it kicks in full tilt on a good sound track. Can't wait to watch 300 on it. 300 and The Bourne Identity both are included in the package.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Player for High-Def Audio   October 8, 2007

The main advantage of this player is the ability to pass audio directly to the receiver. If you have a HDMI receiver capable of processing TrueHD or DTS-Master audio, then the A35 is right for you. I have my A35 hooked up to an ONKYO 605 receiver and the sound is phenomenal. If you don't have or plan to get an HDMI receiver, you're probably better off going with the A30 and saving a few bucks.

However, when you talk about value, I have to think back to a year ago when you could only get a 1080i player for $500. Now, for under $500, you can get this A35 with 1080p processing and HDMI 1.3 support. On top of that, the movies `300' and `The Bourne Identity" are in the box (a $60 value) and you get 5 more free movies by mail ($150 value). Plus: Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks support HD DVD exclusively, so some of the hottest hit will only be available in HD DVD.

1 out of 5 stars I got Lemon Player   November 14, 2007

This is my first HD-DVD Player. I have a Toshiba 57 HDTV, I bought 6 years back, which never gave any problem. So I went with Toshiba. My expectation level was very high based on the reviews that this product has received.

Initial setup was easy. I tested the unit with both HD-DVDs and standard DVDs. The HD picture and sound quality were excellent. While watching my first HD-DVD disc that came free with the player, the player froze half way through the movie. I tried to turn off the player and it locked up completely. It displays a Welcome on the display but it would not respond to controls from either the front panel or the remote. I forced to power down by pressing and holding the power button until it powered off. I tried it couple of times and it won't go past the Welcome display.

I called the Toshiba Support and they made me do the power down and back routine and they wanted me to ship the item to their service center at my expense. Since it has been only 2 days, I said I will return it back to Amazon and try a replacement. I hope, I get a better one the second time, if not, that too will go back and I will try Blue Ray.

1 out of 5 stars Do you want to pay $300+ to be a beta-tester?   December 18, 2007

Because it was the best-featured and most-recommended HD-DVD player among those listed in a December 2007 Amazon promotion, I paid $300+ for this unit. I don't have a Blu-Ray player, but after lots of online and in-store research, I bought this as the DVD player for a brand-new setup comprising a Pioneer Kuro PDP-5080 HD 50-inch plasma HD TV and a Sony STR DA5300ES A/V receiver (both of which I'm well satisfied with). They're all connected via HDMI, and I kept my multi-thousand mid-1990s 5.1 speakers set-up (which the Sony receiver is driving very nicely). The final main component, for which I'm still awaiting installation, is a DirecTV HD-receiver/DVR, to replace my existing DirecTV/TiVo DVR.

When it's working smoothly, the picture and sound from this DVD player -- right out of the box, with little tweaking and no serious massaging, barely cracking any of the owners' manuals -- is drop-to-your-knees thank-you-Jesus fabulous.

But this DVD player is not remotely ready for prime-time. It's INSULTINGLY BAD, and I'm frankly angry at Amazon for promoting it to me.

To begin with, this is fricking 2007. I do not expect to pay $300+ for any electronic component for which I have to re-enter the year, date, and time whenever there's a power loss. (NO BATTERY BACKUP. For that alone, someone at Toshiba should be compelled to commit career sepuku.)

Beyond that, notwithstanding my connection of the player to the 'net and execution of the firmware update (to 3.1, the most current version available), this machine cannot smoothly play BRAND NEW unscratched unmarred HD-DVDs fed to it directly out of the manufacturer's wrapping without so much as a fingerprint, much less a serious scratch. Skipping/non-tracking seems to recur on Track 3, about 20 to 21 minutes into, EVERY SINGLE HD-DVD I've tried so far.

Roughly once in every three hours of play-back, it will simply lock up. I have to unplug the damned thing and reboot it from scratch. And each such time I have to tell it: Umm, yes, it's still December 14th, just like the last time you seized up, you ridiculous piece of high-priced crap.

Given that I can spend $50 for a highly refined ordinary DVD player (with, thank you, battery backup) from any of a dozen different manufacturers -- ALL of which will smooth out and play, without skipping, rental DVDs that are vastly more scratched and marred -- I can't help but conclude that this product isn't fit to be marketed yet. If you buy it, you will not just be an "early adapter," you will be a "FRUSTRATED early adapter." I feel cheated.
