Surround sound on a tight budget December 19, 2006 173 out of 178 found this review helpful
This speaker system offers surround sound on a tight budget, with a powered subwoofer not seen in some budget systems.
UPDATE: First, let's get this up front: you need a receiver/amplifier to use these - you can't use them on a PC.
Also, to be clear about the rating - this is an attractive, compact system including cables, from an audio company, with a warranty, at a low price ($50). If that's what you need, it's above average for that price. It's easy to say these aren't great; if a reviewer wants to show how much they know about audio, suggest a better alternative. Finding something at this size and price isn't a slam dunk.
Now, if someone can spend more on speakers, you should spend more and get a better system. Speakers are the place to spend your money, they really determine how a system sounds. For $100, you can do better. For $200, if you shop carefully and wait for a sale on good speakers, you can get very good sound. Or, if you have time to shop for used speakers, that's another approach. Either way, you might add 2 better speakers to use as front left and right, those are most important.
The satellite speakers are not efficient, in terms of converting power into sound, so these will work better if you have power to spare or don't need them to be too loud.
The well-cushioned box includes:
- Five magnetically-shielded satellite speakers in high impact molded plastic. The back has a molded mounting hook and non-protruding clips for the speaker wires.
- An 6.5" active (powered) subwoofer in a high density particle board cabinet
- A set of cables - 20 gauge wire for the satellites, with 12' wires for the fronts, 8' wire for the center, and 30' wires for the surrounds; plus an RCA cable for the subwoofer.
- Feet/pads for the subwoofer and the center channel
The specifications for the satellite speakers are as follows:
2" x 3.5" shielded driver with coated cone 200-20khz frequency response 110 watts power rating 85db sensitivity 8 ohms nominal impedance 4.2" W x 4.4" H x 4.1" D
The specifications for the subwoofer are:
6.5" woofer with polypropylene cone and rubber surround 20-200 Hz frequency response (200 hz crossover frequency) 100 watts amplifier output power 8" W x 12" H x 12.75" D
Warranty is 2 years on parts and labor; you have to ship the speakers to a service center for warranty service.
UPDATE 2: Sound & Vision magazine reviewed this in June 2008, saying, "There's no question that offering six functional speakers for $50 is an impressive feat. ... if you ask me to cite something better for $50 -- or even $100 -- I draw a blank.
Indeed, it seems snobby to criticize this system; it's as easy a target as a McDonald's hamburger. But just as I wouldn't hesitate to spend $35 for a decent bottle of single-malt rather than $12 for a mass-market blended scotch, I'd rather spend $300 or so for a more competent surround-sound speaker system than $50 for the SXXSW6000." So like I said, if you have the money, spend more. If you don't, it's not bad.
Best $50 speaker system out there. December 26, 2006 55 out of 60 found this review helpful
I don't know what some people expect for this price but I got exactly what I expected. Is this a great set of speakers? No it's not, and they don't cost $800 either. I got them for a teenager so he could hook them up to a stereo and have surround sound on the PS3 in his bedroom. These speakers are perfectly suited to that task and believe it or not, sound very good. I'll leave it to you audio fanatics to spend outrageous bucks on something as mundane as speakers. I'm going to save my money and spend it on more important things, like beer.
It's worth 50 bucks December 20, 2006 22 out of 34 found this review helpful
That's all I have to say about it. So so surround sound is still better than no surround sound.
Put the 50 bucks toward another system December 20, 2006 18 out of 46 found this review helpful
Very poor sound. Thought I'd take a chance and it didn't pan out this time. This one will be going back...
Great speakers for the money January 16, 2007 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
At the time I bought these Amazon was selling them for only $50. I've never had a 5.1 setup before, and JVC being a brand name I found the deal too good to pass up (I got a used JVC 5.1 receiver for a good price on ebay to go with it). Anyway, you get good, crisp treble from the speakers and nice round bass from the powered sub. I had the sub turned up to the max and there was no distortion or muddy sound. The only downside is that sometimes the plastic on the satellite speakers will vibrate and this vibration is audible. It doesn't happen too often though, and never happens on "busy" music such as techno. The powered sub is rated at 100 watts, and the speakers at 110 watts (I don't know if this is per channel or for all of them together). Visibly, these look nice and the box includes long, color coded speaker cables and rca cables as well. If you're looking for good sound at a budget price I wouldn't hesitate to get these.
