3 out of 5 stars Sounds great, easy setup, but...   December 7, 2006

I just received this system on Monday. The audio sounds awesome, including the surround sound speakers. However, the surround speakers are kind of clunky/cumbersome if you have to wall-mount them.
The instruction manual is short and sweet.
The on-screen menus are somewhat picky if you press the buttons too fast. I found that it can exit the menu if you try to go too quick.
As far as the DVD player goes, I've noticed that it can sometimes lag a bit for a split-second, almost like it is fighting to keep up sometimes. I've noticed this on two DVDs, one from 1997 (Me Via en Rose) and one fairly new (Fellowship of the Ring), so I don't think it's my source.
I found you need to select 'Film' mode in the options, otherwise the screen tends to shift vertically once in a while, this was annoying. Perhaps the 3:2 pulldown detection had some issue, I'm not sure as I'm not an expert in video processing though.

Summary: As previous reviewer indicated, this system sounds awesome, however, some DVD player quirks keep it from being a great system.

5 out of 5 stars Bang for buck -- it's got everything   January 6, 2007

I wanted a home theater in a box but was nvervous about getting all the right features. This is a great buy because it has everything you need to be current -

- HDMI out
- Fiber-optic audio in (allows you to listen to TV in 5.1 surround, not just DVDs) (it also has RCA input in case your tv doesn't have optical.. i'd note that if you have digi coax you can get a converter for that too).
- Upconversion to HD for DVD's
- EZ to set-up (I got the whole thing wired in hardly any time, flipped the switch and *presto* I honestly wired the entire thing and turned it on and watched a movie without once opening the instruction manual. I will now read it though as i want to customize the surround sound further -- though it really sounds amazing on the default settings.
-The rear speakers can be used in almost any direction -- you can sit them upright on a table and they actually look good. likewise they can be aimed forward, and/or stand-mounted
-Came with plenty of speaker wire, nicely labeled, for getting the entire system running. i got all my wires hidden easily, given there was plenty of wire.
-Even comes with an AM and FM antenna if you want to use the built-in radio

Remote will be tricky to master - tons of features - but all in all the entire thing is intuitive.

The sound is awesome -- it totally changes watching movies and shows with real surround sound... doors opening behind you, music coming from your right, etc. etc.

The bass is fantastic. fills the room, plenty of thump for dramatic soundtracks and action/bomb sequences.

For the money you can't beat this. Yes, part of me wants a component system, but i don't want anything too big.. all the component systems just take up too much room unless you have custom cabinetry.. and then you can't use the remote unless it's all visible which means all the compenents would need to be showing.. whereas this thing takes up no space and packs a punch. to have such an awesome unit that is so compact is worth giving up on component system.

visually, the dvd is awesome on my LC HDTV. i am constantly blown away.

again, the sound is awesome, and tons of power out of the sub and speakers.

2 out of 5 stars Too many annoying issues for me.   November 28, 2006

The sound from this system is very good. It is easy to use and has multiple inputs.

However, the annoyances and idiosyncrasies overcome the excellent sound quality.

The same base tuner/DVD player is used for the THC4, THC40, THC5, THC50 and THC60. These comments would apply to all these models. The differences are with the speakers and subwoofer.

The DVD often looses it's place, even with the "Resume" feature turned on. It does this whenever you turn the unit off or switch to a different input, say your cable-TV or VCR. This is very annoying, especially when I have to repeatedly sit through the endless copyright notices.

The on-screen prompts never display which DVD is playing. Minor but yet another example of a poorly thought out design.

The "Universal Remote" isn't. It will only operate *some* JVC components. For example, it will not operate a two-year JVC TV!

No audio out!

Headphone usage: You cannot connect headphones without cutting off the speakers. Since there is no audio output, there is just no other way than to use the headphone jack in front. Unplug the headphones and it takes 5-6 seconds to switch the speakers back on. Sometimes when listening to music, I want put on the wireless headphones while working around the house, but I do not want to wear them all the time. Maybe I just want to run into the kitchen and do not want to miss any dialog.

Even with this limitation, there is a killer problem. Headphones will only work for a few minutes before. Then, without warning you get ear-splitting hiss. Unplugging and plugging in the headphones corrects this but what is the point? At first I thought my headphones had died so I bought another pair. It was not the headphones. Headphones are useless with this unit.

So, if you always watch a DVD from start to finish, never use headphones, and own nothing but recently manufactured JVC products, I think you will be happy. If you do not, I think you will like the sound, but will be often annoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Great package   April 5, 2007

First of all this system can not compete with a system that costs twice as much. However, for the price this can't be beat. The sound is really good in dolby digital. Just make sure to use the optical input. It has only one so if you have other devices such as ps3, xbox360 then I recommend getting a switcher that will handle all the optical ins and then send to the reciever. The sound separation is really good and the center channel is great for a system like this. The music does not drown out the voices as I have heard with other systems. The feature that convinced me to buy this was that with a complete sound systems you get a upconverter dvd to 720p or 1080i when using HDMI. The upconvert is decent but it definitely is not as good as a Bluray in 1080i. I am using this in a big room so the bass is not that great but others have said it is very loud in their setup. The tower speakers look nice and match my tv. The rear speakers look nice and my wife actually likes the look. The system enhances the look of the hdtv. You cannot go wrong if you are looking in this price range.

1 out of 5 stars Dont buy this product   May 31, 2007

bought the system day after Christmas and been using it since then. Having all sorts of problems with it. First the HDMI input does not work properly. It would sometimes detect the TV is connected and most of the time, it would not. So i have to reset the HDMI cable for it to work. Second, the audio and video is not synchronized. Its like watching a foreign film that's dubbed in english. Third, the system would just stop working and I have to reset the center unit to make it to work again. And most importantly, JVC customer support was there to waste your time. Canned replies and they don't even try to troubleshoot the problem, they would just point you to an authorized service center which is 50 miles away. I chose this because of the features only to find out most of the features don't work. Now the system doesnt power up. Warranty is 12 months for parts but only 3 months for labor. so now I either have to pay for labor or just throw this piece of junk and get a better system... anything but JVC.
