Amazon.com Product Description The JBL SCS-145.5 SCS Series Home Theater Speaker System is a complete, compact home cinema speaker package that includes everything you need to re-create the excitement of movie theater sound in the comfort of your living room. With a center channel, four satellite speakers, and a powerful subwoofer, the SCS-145.5 will shatter the myth that bigger means better. The four satellite speakers are true, two-way speakers and each are constructed with a three-inch midrange transducer and a 0.5-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeter. The center channel is the most important component of a surround sound system, but, oddly enough, it is often overlooked. Featuring dual three-inch midrange transducers and a single 0.5-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeter, JBL has given the center channel the attention it deserves. This speaker uses the same transducers as the satellites for seamless pans, but with two midranges in one speaker, the center unit delivers extra power and clarity in the dialogue channel. Proper placement of all these speakers will bring stampeding buffalo and screeching TIE fighters right into your living room. The 100-watt powered subwoofer delivers thunderous, penetrating bass through the low-frequency, eight-inch driver. This compact system delivers all the sound, clarity and bass you desire in a home theater system and with wall-mount brackets and cables included, you'll be ready to turn your living room into a cinema right out of the box. What's in the Box Four satellite speakers, one center channel, one subwoofer, wall-mount brackets, and cables.

please understand audio equipment... read this! February 11, 2006 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
The last reviewer stated that the center channel speaker is "barely audible" and the speakers "sounded horrible". There is nothing wrong with these speakers. They are made of high-quality components and are probably your best bang for your buck. First, the first reviewer was probably trying to listen to stereo sound through his surround sound system. The reason there was very little sound coming through the center channel is probably because the receiver makes the center channel a phantom channel, where the left and right signals from stereo sound are combined and put through the center as a "filler" speaker. Or... if the reviewer hooked up his DVD player to the receiver using just the two RCA inputs, he will get stereo sound here as well, even though the DVD is encoded in Dolby Digital surround. The receiver will try to make stereo sound into surround using Dolby ProLogic Surround when given stereo inputs, and this is less-than-digital performance, sometimes needing some extra tweaking on the receiver in order to get ample dialogue. BOTTOM LINE: everything depends on the receiver and the connections you are using between your DVD player and the receiver. If the receiver is not of quality, it may not put enough power into the speakers, or it may put unclean power to the speakers causing them to distort. If you are not using a digital coaxial cable or an optical cable between your DVD player and your Dolby Digital receiver (make sure it has a decoder), then the sound will most likely be stereo sound synthesized into Doly ProLogic surround, which simply mixes the channels into the center, where some dialogue could be lost.
If you have the right equipment and you know how to set it up correctly, you will love these speakers.
Good sound February 23, 2006 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
The speakers produce sound quality that is more than adequate for their design. They are an excellent choice for a person looking for quality on a limited budget.
Great value for the money June 25, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought a set of SCS- 145.5 speakers after my subwoofer went out in an older set of SCS- 135's. At $189.99, these speakers are an excellent value. You're not going to get the same kind of punch that will out of a $2000 JBL setup, of course, but if you have a small living room like mine, these speakers are more than adequate. They also seem to be much improved versus the old SCS- 135 models. The speakers are well balanced, and the bass is meaty, but not overpowering. Highly recommended!
True Theatre Sound November 9, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I checked this speaker out at the Best Buy Display. I have been totally satisfied with the actual performance in my Home Theatre. Also, because most of what we hear from the cable company takes advantage of surround sound, if you are listening on a stereo speaker TV, the vocals will be overwhelmed by the background music and effects. The JBL SCS-145.5 SCS Series Home Theater Speaker System makes it possible to understand what the actors are saying. At the cost, this is a deal for any home system.
Overall very poor speakers, but Subwoofer is very good February 7, 2006 4 out of 20 found this review helpful
Okay, so I just bought the JBL SCS-145.5 Speaker System and they are absolutely horrible! I'm sorry to say, but the Center speaker is ridiculously underpowered/barely audible with the other satellite speakers (which are also weak and tend to get distorted at higher volumes or with a lot of audio going through them). The Subwoofer is *very* good, however, so I guess the price tag is justified by the Subwoofer (that's why I gave it 2 stars), but the other speakers are pretty much useless. Just in case anyone wanted to know how these were, I'd recommend staying away from them and maybe spending slightly more and getting a better system.
