Harman Kardon rocks! June 27, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have a friend that works at Harman currently and just recenly found that out. Thankfully she hooked me up with her employee discount. I opted to get that additional set of speakers to go up to 7.1 and I got the match black speaker stands which are really nice to look at. The setup of the system was fairly easy, I would recommend using some bananna clips to make your connections from the speakers to the amp. I do have to say that the wire that the speaker wire that comes with the system is pretty good so I don't think you'd really need to upgrade the wire. I love how the system comes with a microphone that you can place at the optimum spot in the room and the amp will calibrate the speakers for you. I didn't have all the wires I needed to get things going so I'd recommend having an optical wire on hand when you are hooking everything up. Once everything was hooked up all I have to say is wow! it sounds so awesome it shakes my condo. All my friends that have been over have been blown away with the sound. The DVD player is great too. I don't have my HDTV yet(in a few weeks), but I did notice a difference in picture from my PS2 DVD player to the H/K DVD player. The colors were brighter, and the picture was a little more clear. I can't wait to see what it will look like on my new TV. Its almost manditory that you have to play something with loud explosions as soon as you get this hooked up. I started it off with Gone in 60 Seconds, it was like watching the movie all over again. I also use the CP45 to play some play station and that sounds amazing as well. I'm glad I got this HTIB, I highly recommend it to anyone and the price Amazon has is pretty close to what I paid with the employee discount.
Great sound, but... May 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying that this is a great system. I used to work for ALTEC/EVI pro audio, and, for the money, you really can't touch the sound this delivers. The sub, as noted by others, is wonderfully rich and never overpowers the rest of the system. The setup is a little complicated if you're not an audiophile, but it's not that hard, just read the instructions. The onscreen setup is OK, but not very user friendly. My only problem with the system is the DVD player, which "upgrades" the video signal to 480p, is only connectable through component cables. Why is there no HDMI connection to this unit? Less expensive (not as great sounding) systems come with an HDMI connection, H/K should step up the quality of the player in this boxed set. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase, I bought for sound/price, and the sound I am getting is wonderful, so I'm happy with that. If you are buying for picture quality, without going Blu Ray, this is not your system.
Not your typical HTIB November 20, 2008 I've only heard the HK home theater in a box systems twice. Both times, I was very impressed. With the deep discounts offered on this system (presently less than $400), for the price of an inexpensive HTIB, you get a receiver, DVD player and truly good speakers and subwoofer which HK sold as separates for a lot more money. Most home theater in the box system skimp somehwere -- either the speakers are cheap or the amplifier is not of the quality you would hope for. Nothing is skimped on here.
While the amplifier looks like it does not have much power, it must be noted that HK typically under rates their amps for power and provides them with a large power supply and the ability to reproduce frequencies well above and below the range of human hearing. This gives the amp clarity and detail and makes it feel like it has a good bit more power. I should also point out that while I have an old HK amplifier with 200 watts per power, I rarely use more than about 2 watts to power my speakers.
The speakers are well matched to the amplifier and are of similar high quality. They retail for about $500. They are higher quality than the typical HT in a box. The subwoofer is a full 10" sub with 100 watts of power, not some small excuse for a sub so often put in HTIBs.
I cannot comment on the DVD player other than to say that HK typically has a good reputation and uses high quality digital to analog converters and audio chips.
Because of the size of the speakers, this system would do well in a bedroom or small apartment. I would certainly opt for this system instead of a similarly priced Onkyo, Bose or Sony. You will be glad you purchased it. This is an incredible value at anywhere under $500.
