Amazon.com Product Description
Time to replace your old VCR? Add DVD playback to the VHS mix with the JVC HRXVC16B DVD/VCR combo player and continue to enjoy your VHS library while also enjoying the high-quality video and improved audio of DVD discs. This unit also enables easy copying of your home videos saved to DVD disc to VHS tape (not compatible with dubbing copy-protected DVD content). It makes a great addition to your home theater set-up, thanks to its component video output, Dolby Digital/DTS processing from compatible DVD discs, and a coaxial digital audio output for 5.1-channel surround sound from your home theater receiver. This slim, space-saving unit comes in a black cabinet, but it's also available in silver (HRXVC17S).

The HRXVC16B's progressive scan DVD player is compatible with standard DVD movie and CD audio discs as well as DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, VCD, and CD-R/RW discs as well as JPEG digital images burned to CD-R/RW discs. Other DVD features include variable-speed search options including slow-motion, frame-by-frame playback, and picture zoom.

The four-head, hi-fi VCR offers SP/SLP playback and recording, 1-month/8-event programming, and the capability of recording to the VCR while watching a DVD disc. The 30-second commercial skip feature makes it easy to zip past ads while watching your favorite taped TV shows. And with Super-VHS Quasi Playback (SQPB), this VCR can play back a tape recorded in Super VHS, with regular VHS resolution.

This unit offers the following connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 2 in (1 front), 1 out (for use with both DVD and VCR)
  • Component video: 1 out (for DVD only)
  • RF: 1 in, 1 out (for VCR only)
  • Audio output: 1 coaxial, 1 optical digital out (for DVD only)

Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo, remote control (with batteries), printed operating instructions

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate description, very mad.   December 14, 2006

"Audio outputs: Analog, digital coaxial, digital optical "
This is a lie. The unit does NOT have digital optical output. That's the only reason I ordered this unit. Now I've got to screw around with RMAs and mailing this thing back. Maybe Amazon should open a box and look at the product before writing the decription.

1 out of 5 stars Steer clear ... you've been warned   December 30, 2006

I once bought THREE of these things ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now. Now they've added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)

They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.

DVD freezing has happens on ALL THREE of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.

Anyway, thanks to JVC I ended up with several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest there's not a chance JVC will make good on them.

I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesn't place much value on their brand or image or they wouldn't have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

I'll never buy another JVC product again. A month after I bought this it began going into "loading" mode - which is apparently what it does when first being plugged in. After searching the poorly written manual in vain for a solution, I called them and had to pack up the thing and send it in for repair. Now, it is doing the same thing again, more and more frequently and the only solution is to unplug it and then start all over again. This makes watching tapes and DVDs pretty tedious. Forget taping anything, as you never know if it will do this during taping. Too much money, too little service and pretty much a crummy product.
