Not very impressed. November 11, 2007 77 out of 79 found this review helpful
I haven't had this machine very long, but have to say that so far I am not too impressed. I charged up the battery per the instructions and got a video to check it out. if it hadn't had words on the opening screen I might not have noticed how bad the pixilation is, enough I would guess, to make reading the credits impossible. Neither the color nor sharpness are anywhere near as good as on the phillips (which actually costs a bit less), nor is the build quality.
This machine is unusual, in that it has a detachable battery. This *could* be an advantage as it would allow you to carry a spare and double the battery life...BUT it is just about impossible to find the spare/ replacement battery; even audiovox's site doesn't list them (among the dozens they list for other models). It's also worth noting that the way it hangs off the back is kind of clunky and means the machine will need to be treated with more care than many.
I bought this because it had such good (4.5 stars) reviews, but noticed that many are from people who bought this for a toddler or other young child, and may not even have watched it themselves. I bought this for myself, for travel, and am much less impressed.
Last year my son got a coby 10" tablet for the about the same price (actually, $20 less). It is sturdy, compact and has better picture, better build.
I was looking for something smaller (than his 10")...but this isn't- (only the screen). I may be returning this, as for just a few dollars more you can get a better picture & more features, and EVERY other portable dvd player I've seen is more compact. An 8" player should not weigh as much, and take up as much space as a 10".
I'd recommend the coby, phillips and toshiba players over this one (for good bets in this price range).
Perfect package for younger viewers November 25, 2007 35 out of 35 found this review helpful
If you're searching for a portable DVD player for your own use (or another person over the age of, say, 6), this is not the player you're looking for. Instead, take a look at the Philips PET1030 10.2" Portable DVD Player with Car Mount Kit and comparable units. For the rest of us--those who need a reliable player for trips with the younger kids--this is a solid purchase.
I demand the very best audio and video quality that I can afford. My three year old, on the other hand, could care less whether a display is 1080p or 108p. As long as her DVDs are edu-taining her, she's happy.
The picture on this unit won't impress you. My test viewing of Pirates of the Caribbean was laughable--no matter how I tweaked the video settings (brightness/contrast/sharpness/hue), I couldn't trick a decent picture from the low-res display. However, the type of programming a pre-6 year old watches, such as animated shows and Sesame Street programs, looks quite good.
The package includes everything you need for the road. On our first road trip--a ten-hour roundtrip weekend getaway--we needed every included accessory and nothing more. In the car, the soft carrying case easily attached to the headrest, providing a nice viewing area at eye-level with my child. The car adapter has a lengthy cord that can reach an outlet in the front console. The inclusion of two sets of headphones came in handy--Mom and daughter watched a DVD together while I enjoyed NPR's Sunday line-up. The remote control is another great feature--instead of reaching back to forward to the next chapter, I used the remote from the front seat to find the section my daughter wanted to watch.
All in all, its a no fuss, full-featured portable DVD package perfectly suited for the younger set. And let's face it--any electronic gadget in the vicinity of a child is in constant danger from a spill from a juicebox or a fall from tiny hands. Best if the loss of your investment doesn't make you cry, too.
Good player for price August 3, 2007 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Bought this for my 3 yr old for summer vacation plane trip. Worked well, played DVD's and audio CD's with no issues. Headphones included with system are a little large for small children, but fit an adults head just fine. Picture quality was good, audio quality was also good. All-in-all a good product for the price.

This player is easy to use. I have not had any problems and thus far and extremely satisfied with it. I would recommend it.
Nice Machine August 31, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am very happy with this DVD player. I bought it for my tread mill and it works fine. The sound is not good without the headphones and you have to play around a little with the screen to get the right viewing angle. It is very easy to load and doesn't require a Master's in Engineering to set up. All in all for the price I don't see how you can go wrong.
