Great for traveling light! August 31, 2004 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This Mintek 5" portable DVD player has its drawbacks. Its small screen is best for individual viewing (two people, at most), the sound is thin, and its minimalist controls are awkward to use. However, this little machine has traveled everywhere with us without trouble. At a slim 5"x 5", not much bigger than a disc, this player can be tossed in a backpack or carry-on suitcase without taking much space. It comes with a car adaptor, a battery and charger, and a cord for household current. The battery life tends to last about one movie, so I tend to use it mostly with the car or the AC/DC adaptor even though running it off battery power performs just as well. The mechanism seems a little flimsy, especially compared to the full-size player I'm used to, so I don't recommend putting this in the hands of rough little ones. (My teenager has no trouble using it.)
For a relatively inexpensive and lightweight DVD player, the Mintek does its job.
waste of time and money October 31, 2004 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
the battery doesn't last through a whole movie. pretty much have to use the car adaptor, works better that way. Even after using the ac adaptor it still doesn't play the movie without skipping (disc are clean). I wouldn't recommend this product.
Stay Away! December 2, 2004 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this item around the holiday season for my wife. Around August we used it for the first time and were pleased with it and started to use it regularly. After a month of use, the screen one day just shut down. It will not work. I called the company and they informed me that while the product was under warranty the labor is not. They said the labor cost is $90. Considering the fact that the whole player only cost me $105, this is an outrage. They are a cheap junky company, who is looking to make a quick buck at no cost.
Great buy for the price December 7, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Yes, the screen is small, but that's also the appeal. A portable DVD player isn't so portable if the screen is 7 or 8 inches and it comes with a huge bag for carrying everything. I can hold this 5" Mintek in an old Discman case, so it easily fits into a backpack or carry-on for travel.
I've watched several movies at just under 2 hours and had no problems with the battery (I haven't tested it to see if it goes the full 2.5 hrs as advertised). I never had any problems with skipping or the battery dying prematurely.
I even used it a couple times as a DVD player on a larger tv and it works great. I have also played many CD's on it. The thing I like best is that any cables/adaptors you could possibly need are included.
Sure, the units 2 and 3 times more expensive are likely better in quality, but in terms of quality for the dollar, I'm very happy with the Mintek 5860.

Although several of the reviews for this product have been good, the player I bought only lasted about two weeks. Whenever I put a disc in, it skips constantly. I tested the discs on other players and had no problems, so I am assuming it must be the player. I didn't drop it or anything, so it seems like it is just cheaply made. I wouldn't recommend buying this.
