Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With super-stylish looks, this lightweight and very compact SAMSUNG DVD player upconverts standard discs to 720p, 1080i or 1080p. This means you can now watch your DVD movies in beautiful near high definition. It also plays the most popular multimedia formats like DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG and MPEG-4 clips. Slim, but powerfully-packed with upscale features, the F1080 takes DVD players to another level.

5 out of 5 stars Works wonderfully   April 8, 2008

We have had this player for a couple of weeks now. We recently purchased a Full Hi Def television but not quite ready to plunge another $400+ into a Blu Ray player. This little machine is a gem. It works exactly the way it should. We have it connected to the TV via HDMI and the picture is fantastic -- our SD DVDs look incredible. Not sure what the previous reviewer is referring to. There is no set up, simply connect the cable and plug it in. Also, there is no problem with the power cable -- it's standard length. The machine is sleek and intuitive. All you have to do is insert the disc -- the machine will turn on the TV, change to the proper input and load directly to the main menu. We were completely amazed the first time we inserted a movie. Honestly, if this is a small sampling of Hi Def, a Blu Ray player might be in our future soon. I cannot get over the clarity.

5 out of 5 stars Please ignore the 1 star rating   April 22, 2008

I don't think the 1 star review by Igor H. Souza is fair. He should have refrained from posting as he is clueless about dvd players. Anyways, on to my review:

This is a solid player for the price. The best feature is it's design. It takes up less than half the space of conventional dvd players and has a very modern / futuristic design. The curvy, sleek shape is like no other dvd player on the market today. As for performance, this is a 1080p upconverting player. It is unfair to compare the picture quality to Blu Ray or the now defunct HD-DVD format. The picture quality of Blu Ray / HD DVD has a very fluid quality that no normal DVD player can replicate. However, I think in the next one year Blu Ray prices will drop significantly and paying $400 for a Blu Ray player may not be the best long term investment. Most Blu Ray players have some bugs that still need to be worked out. I have a 37" Samsung 1080P LCD tv and the picture quality of this player is pretty impressive. Make sure to tweak the picture settings from the setup menu or else you will get an oversaturated picture. My settings are Brightness 4 / Color 2 / Contrast 5. Any weaknesses? 1. I'm not crazy about the micro size remote. I don't understand why a micro size dvd player needs to have a matching sized remote. 2. The remote response is a bit sluggish.

Overall, I highly recommend this player to anyone looking for an affordable solution until Blu Ray player prices drop.

This does what you would expect. Upconverts with high quality and in a small stylish package. Got mine for $60 and could not be happier.

5 out of 5 stars great upconverter dvd player   June 26, 2008

I bought this for my mom's samsung 42 plasma and the picture quality is great. There is a big difference when playing the same dvd through my xbox 360 and the dvd player w/ hdmi. though the 360 is only component there still is a difference when I have the dvd player component. its compact, buttons are touch, plays divx (.avi file) movies and a lot of other video formats that I have not seen in other players, and simple to use. when loading the dvd w/ tv turned off, the player will automatically turn on the tv and go to the right channel to play (this maybe only with samsung tvs but im not positive). overall great player for HDTVs, im thinking about buying one for myself b/c the difference in picture quality a lot better than my 360.

5 out of 5 stars Meaning of Upconverting   June 24, 2008

To get the full capabilities of this dvd player you NEED to have an HDTV! let me repeat that again....NEED TO HAVE HDTV to get full capabilities otherwise you are wasting your money except for the space saving design. It takes a standard DVD and instead of showing it @ the standard dvd resolution of around 480 or less i do not remember exactly, adds in more lines for a more detailed picture up to 1080 or in-between depending on the maximum resolution of your tv. For those curious I am not sure what happens if you try to play a blu-ray dvd though, but just remember that it is a step up from a regular dvd player but is still not blu-ray quality! One more thing for those of you who do not know this uses a HDMI (which combines the audio and video all into one cable) connection not the [S-video] or [Red, White, Yellow].
