 Nice Inexpensive Player with A Poor Manual April 25, 2006

I bought this to replace a failed DVD player to tide us over until the HDDVD, BlueRay issue settles out. $55 at a local video store made it pretty painless. It seems to work nicely. Picture looks better than the old Toshiba. It has a host of functions which would be okay if the manual and remote weren't so poor. The salesman assured me that it would output either interlaced or progressive scan but it's not mentioned in the manual. The remote has a ton of very tiny buttons, one of which is multiple function labeled both VFP (Video Fine Processin which lets you adjust picture tone) and I/P which I finally guessed to be Interlace/Progressive. The manual completely ignores what it means or how it's used. After much frustration it seems that switching between interlace & progressive requires you to press & hold the button for a couple seconds while VFP requires a quick press & release. This is a real trap for the unwary that absolutely should have been covered in the manual. Hold this button down a little too long with a non progressive scan TV and the picture disappears with no clue as to why. I was close to assuming the player had failed before figuring this out.
The remote is very small with close spaced tiny buttons making it difficult to use and the functions are not user friendly.
If you're willing to overlook the poor manual & remote, it does produce a nice picture for a small investment.

DVD is old tech nowadays. Pretty much any DVD player is going to give you a decent picture and sound and have lots of features (MP3, pictures, etc.). The real difference between cheap ones and more expensive ones is the mechanism. This one has a cheap plastic tray mechanism that can vibrate annoyingly. I've had two of these players (had to return one due to another malfunction) and they both do it. You can stop the vibrating just by putting your finger on the tray door, but obviously that's not something you should have to do. The display doesn't show as much as it could; for instance, it shows elapsed time but not the current chapter at the same time. This is not of much concern to me, but be aware of its limited capabilities. Note that this player does NOT have an optical digital audio output, as many DVD players do. Only coax digital (in addition to the standard RCA audio outputs), which again, is good enough for me. No one who would buy a sub-$100 DVD player could tell (or should care about) the difference between the audio from an optical cable and a coax cable.
On the other hand, it looks nice, it's really compact, I love the simplicity, and it matches my JVC receiver and TV. The picture quality and color are good. My 4 star rating is dependent on the reoccurrence of the vibration, but I'm hopeful that it won't happen consistently.

mine arrived totally broke, and its such a pain to ship it back, wait for it to get to vanns, then you have to wait another week for your refund, so if i were you i wouldnt buy this dvd player, but im not exactly impartial

The player worked fine except that it would not always turn on. I had to unplug and plug it back in each time to use it. I sent it off to JVC for warranty service yesterday - cost me 14 bucks. So much for free shipping. I will re-think buying electronics online next time.

Simple, easy to use and an excellent price. Sleek & good looking.
I still havenot learned what all this player can do so it would be helpful to have a better user's manual.
