Amazon.com Product Description
Nicely affordable yet packed full of powerful video and audio playback features, the Toshiba SD-3990 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player has a stylishly silver, super-slim profile that measures just 1.65 inches high. It's also compatible with a wide variety of disc and digital file formats, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD discs as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG (Kodak Picture and FujiColor CDs) content burned to disc. It's also DivX Home Theater Certified, meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format.

The SD-3990 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it. Other DVD playback features include fast scan, slow motion, multi-angle selection, multi-subtitle selection, and parental lock.

You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers. It features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite A/V: 1
  • S-Video: 1
  • Component Video: 1
  • Digital audio: 1 coaxial

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

1 out of 5 stars Player broke after only 4 months of light use!   June 4, 2006

I bought this DVD player because I trusted the Toshiba brand after owning 2 Toshiba TV's over the years and being very pleased with them. Needless to say I have owned this DVD player for only 4 months and now it refuses to play any disks. I have put in several brand new DVD movies into the player and it keeps saying "Bad Disc" on the screen. Or, it will get to the main menu and then freeze. I've tried everything I can think of to make it work, but the machine is clearly broken. I only watch about 1 DVD a week, and am very gentle with the player so I can't imagine why it suddenly has stopped working (other than poor craftsmanship). Of course, the Warranty is only good for 3 months, so I've just wasted $60 on a player that I now have to replace. I am very disappointed with this product, and definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND it.

this player is not bad when it works...

good things:
it can play NTSC and PAL DVD, VCD. and when it plays PAL VCD, it will fit the image so that the image is not out of proper aspect ratio. you can even easily choose the left or right audio channel which is typical of VCD. further, this dvd player can play DivX, MPG, mp3, jpg. It can play DivX with subtitles. when fast forwarding, it can go up to 30x and 100x (seems like not 100x but maybe 50x). when you step frame by frame, it works flawlessly.

can be improved:
DivX subtitle is too high on the screen. it is somewhat obstructing the picture. and there seems to be no way to adjust the subtitle so that it can be lower and bigger. the subtitle is pure white with no outline color, so if the movie happens to have a white patch of area, then the subtitle is not visible. furthermore, the subtitle being supported seems to be the text file (.srt) but not the bitmap subtitle (.sub). also for some files, when i fast forward it, it will all of a sudden go back to the beginning of the file and even to the previous files... so it seems like a bug. another thing is that there seems to be no way to make the player "region free"... so if you go to europe and buy a DVD and bring it back home, you can't play it.

1 out of 5 stars If you plan on listening to music with this, think again.   January 2, 2007

Two big problems with this DVD player. One, based on experience I stupidly assumed all DVD players display elapsed time while playing disks. This one just shows the track number. If you want to know how much of a movie you've watched (to mentally calculate how much is left) you're out of luck.

Two, this thing STINKS for playing music. Regardless of how your CD is encoded, it will pause two seconds between EVERY TRACK . . . which can be irritating when you're playing a CD of allegedly-continuous music, like an opera or the White Album or Dark Side of the Moon. I called Toshiba to ask about this, and they were confirmed this. They said ALL Toshiba DVD players pause between music tracks, and that basically I was stuck.

So, I'm warning you, and frankly I think they should print a warning on every box. (Something like "Won't play music properly! Just going to make you mad!") And I'm not buying Toshiba again.

Never in my life have I despised a mere machine as I do this dinky thing.
Bought it (via online auction, you know the one) because I have a Toshiba TV also with what they call ColorStream.
Where do I begin?
The tray release is eensy-weensy and must be pressed and re-pressed before it deigns to open or close.
In fact, all the controls are eensy-weensy and irritating to finagle.
Gimcrack is the word for this item, a thing so cheap and flimsy it will hardly sit down on a shelf.
But then, I despise the accompanying manual just as fiercely.
Some labor group must have PAID Toshiba to deliberately mislead and confuse and omit information from the defenseless consumer.
The front panel lights up and says "NO" instead of "ON."
That really sums it up.
Next time I see a Toshiba product, I too will say NO NO NO NO, and a thousand times NO!

1 out of 5 stars caters well to a niche market   February 19, 2006

I had high hopes for this product, as the competing Philips DivX capable DVD player has had a lot of complaints about reliability.

The good news is that this player is, in some ways, more capable than advertised. It played a DVD+R disc in PAL format, athough the manual specifically states that it only plays NTSC, and doesn't mention +R. As for quality, well, the sound was fine, and it was interesting to discover that it could fast forward in an audio CD. Play was extremely quiet, impressively so. Also, the black on the video display was the finest I have ever seen (or not seen) -- simply beyond criticism, untarnished by even the slightest sign of color or light.

The bad news is that in the video realm, the player stuck steadfastly to its strength, and displayed only black. No picture at all. Not a single pixel. Not even a setup screen or a screensaver could be coaxed from the player. I tested mainly with component video into a Toshiba colorstream TV, using the supplied cable, and also the cable currently working just fine with a Koss 4125 player (a present on loan from my daughter, which I highly recommend -- the player, that is, in this context, although I recommend my daughter also). I also tested with ordinary video output, with entirely consistent results. My only other criticism is that the tray is very flimsy.

So, I can recommend this only for blind solitary video enthusiasts, a niche market if ever I've seen one. Unfortunately (or should that be fortunately?), this reviewer doesn't fall into this category. I've already printed my return slip, and will bid the Toshiba SD-3990 a fond farewell.
