5 out of 5 stars The filter every autofocus camera user NEEDS!   May 14, 2002
49 out of 50 found this review helpful

If you have an autofocus camera and shoot photos outdoors, this filter needs to be attached to the end of your lens. (If you have a manual focus camera you need a linear polarizer) The polarizer darkens blue skies (if the sky is light blue, you get deep, rich blue) and eleminates glare and reflection in glass and water.

With this filter, you can take a photo of someone standing in front of a window and not have the glare or reflection of the window shooting back into the lens. It also helps you shoot indoors at an aquarium (you can take crystal-clear photos of the killer whales and dolphins without glare from the glass).

This filter can't take the photos for you, but it can make your photos look much more professional. The only thing to be careful of is the fact that the polarizer makes the image a little darker, so if you are shooting in dark light, you need a flash or a slower shutter speed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Filters   November 4, 2005

I am an just an amateur, and I have owned these filters (+ others of the same brand) for about two years, and I have been very very happy with them. In particular, you cannot believe how different your landscape pictures will look like with a cicular polarizer filter unless you try it. This filter will really change your life (well, picturewise at least...). If used properly, you will have pictures with incredibly neat colors. The way it will render the blue of a noon sky is unbelievable. These filters are well worth their price. If you only want to buy one, you should definitely buy the circular polarizer.

5 out of 5 stars great buy, a camera necessity   January 9, 2002

Improves pictures dramatically and protects lense. Top quality and sent in a neat bag. Local camera store had this at twice the price.

1 out of 5 stars Does not fit Panasonic DMC-FZ50   September 7, 2007

This filter shows up as a recommended accessory for the Panasonic DMC-FZ50. However, it does not fit this particular camera.

The diameter is right, 55mm. But the threads are not right. At first, I suspected that the threads-per-inch is different. But I went to a local camera store and purchased another filter, and this Tiffen filter screws in to the new filter OK. So I suspect that it's not the threads-per-inch, but maybe the threads are too tall (they have a slightly large diameter which binds against the camera).

The man at my local camera store said that Tiffen changed their packaging a long while back, and the filter that I had was in the older packaging. So perhaps this filter was made for older film cameras and not for newer digital cameras (that's him talking, not me).

Either way, this filter only screws in about 1/3 of a turn and then starts to bind. Don't buy this filter to fit a Panasonic DMC-FZ50.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap is not always good   February 20, 2007

There is a reason why some things are cheap, and it's because they are...ummm...cheap. Bad frame, uneven color on the glass. Polarizing filter aside from having AIR BUBBLES on front glass, almost falls apart. Screwing and unscrewing them is a pain. If you are even a little bit serious about photography, don't waste your money on this set. Get yourself at least a set of HOYA filters.
