Product Description 58mm Haze (UV-1) filters are used by many photographers to protect the front element of their lens from abrasions, dust, and moisture. They also have a very subtle warming effect, which can be useful to counter the "cool" colors you sometimes get in bright sun or in shade.
Amazon.com Product Description The Canon UV-1 filter for 58mm lenses absorbs harmful ultraviolet rays without increase of exposure, thereby preventing haziness and foggy effects in distant landscapes. It also has a very subtle warming effect, which can be useful to counter the "cool" colors you sometimes get in bright sun or in shade. It can be left on the lens at all times for protection of the camera's lens.

Easier to Clean and Replace Than Your Front Element May 10, 2006 50 out of 54 found this review helpful
I never take my UV filter off of my lens unless I am going to immediately put on a different filter. There are basically two camps out there, those that feel you should always use a UV filter to protect your lens from dirt and scratches and those that feel it is a waste of time and only degrades your image. Well, I tried going without one for awhile and then dirt started to build up on the front element of my very expense lens. And although you can clean the front element of a lens, I feel much, much safer wiping my comparatively cheap UV filter time and time again rather than chancing any actual lens damage. I think for the nearly unquantifiable loss in image quality you may suffer by having a UV filter on, it is well worth the extra piece of mind it gives me.
Vendor's fault March 10, 2006 30 out of 46 found this review helpful
When I opened the package, I found the filter box seals (one at each side) were broken, an indication that it was not new. I thought it's ok as long as the glass is clean and clear. When I opened the filter box, three pieces, the ring, the glass and the circular clamp, jumped out. While it's bad sign, I still thought it's ok as long as I could put them together. Well, the glass was not clear, as if it was sanded in the middle with a fine sand paper (I never saw any filter or lens in that shape before!). Before to ship it back, I did try to put three pieces togather (so next person will not see these pieces jump out when open the box). Guess what, the circular clamp was about 2-3mm longer and two ends couldn't meet!!! I couldn't image any scenario under which this could happen, since it was from Amazon, not from some unknowns of eBay (actually, any eBayer will have to worry about the Feedback). I was really shocked that Amazon shipped that garbage to its customer!
Hope this is just a random incident and Amazon does have a very easy return practice. Otherwise, I would not buy anything from Amazon.

Works well on a normal camera
Tried it with adapter on S3 IS and adapter does not fit robustly.
Filter is Ok
I BOUGHT TWO - No Problems June 24, 2006 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I was concerned when I ordered this filter about the previous problems reported here. But, I was in a hurry and needed two of these for vacation. There was absolutely no problem with the product. Both filters were sealed and in perfect condition. Could have been packed a little better in the shipping box, but arrived in good condition. No problems with photos taken with this product.
Update: Have used these extensively on my Canon XT during the past year. No problems with this product at all. Great protection for my lenses!
you get what you pay for March 26, 2007 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
This filter is cheap and works well in well lit outdoor settings. However, when you move indoors without flash, strong light sources (such as a candle or window) cause internal reflections in the photo.
