Cokin filters were invented by professional photographer Jean Coquin. By using square filters like Cokin's, which fit into a holder and are attached to a lens via an adapter ring, the photographer has a number of immediate advantages. There is no need to duplicate filters to fit different size lenses, up to three filters can be used at once to create unique effects, and the photographer has control over the positioning of the effect on the photograph.

If you are an outdoor photographer, this filter is a must for your collection. The gradual grey allows you to get the correct exposure for the sky and land. For example, if you are shooting a sunset (or sunrise) it is easy to correctly expose the sky, living the bottom part of your picture underexposed and almost black. This filter will help in these situations by giving both parts of your picture the proper exposure.The filter itself comes in a protective, plastic case that is well secured. You could throw it in your camera bag and not worry about it accidentally opening. FYI - this filter is part of the Cokin P series, which are a bit bigger than their A series and designed for wider angle lenses. If you aren't sure what size lens you are going to be using the filter with it is probably a good idea to be safe and go with the P series. This filter - probably all filters of this type - introduced a flare that I hadn't anticipated. It can probably be digitally edited more easily than unbalanced exposure, but I was disappointed to see it nonetheless.
Otherwise, the graduated filter did what I'd hoped. The transition is not visible in my photographs, and the adjustability of the system in general is ideal.
